The power of frost

Some of the southern folks don't really understand how much power frost has up here in the north. Saw this at a brand new gas station in town today. You can see how much the concrete in the parking lot has been pushed up past the sidewalk by the frost.

There is a (10-12ft)sectionof gravel road acouple miles south of me that frost heaves about 3 to 6 inches every winter. Then in the dry mid/late sommer it settles as much below the level of the road. Only in spring and fall is the road actually 'level'.Makes for some interesting driving.Hit it too fast, you 'catch air',or bottom out, depending on time of year.

I have a very thick slab of concrete in front of my shop door 25'X20', it will raise up about an inch or so with frost then go back down when it thaws..

There's two 3ft. Or better culverts down the road a ways from me, come a real hard cold snap the road sinks a good 4 to 6 inches, don't want to drive very fast over those dips.

But some of us have different problems. Install a in ground gasoline tank at a new station and do not put fuel in it for a couple of days. The tank will be a above ground tank.

Our water table is so close to the surface we have to watch any thing we do under ground. Our house foundation also has to go down 30+ feet or the house will sink into the ground.

I expect we have more hard freezes and then thaw outs here in VA than you guys do over the course of the Winter. That what breaks up concrete and asphalt here is wet weather then the constant freezing and thawing.

Im in southern Ontario, we have pretty cold winters. Water lines have to be placed 4 ft down under road/laneways.

It will go back down some, but it never seems to settle all the way back to the original grade.

If you don?t go 6ft under here in Manitoba you won?t have water past January

Rule of thumb here is 7-8 under high traffic area. Had a sewer line freeze 6 ft down just from foot traffic at a business. That was no fun to go with out washroom from February to April. They finally got a steam pipe in to thaw it

Oh my Dad understood the power of frost--I'm in Tn.
He said Jack Frost could do more in one night than he could in 6 months!!!

I had a Moderator on another forum call be a liar because I maintained that fence posts had to driven back down at least every other spring in cold country as we see in Northern NY. She said her "daddy" and husband had never had to drive a post back down and it got "real cold" in Arkansas or where ever she was from. Some people ignorance is their own fault.
