New longhorn calf

One of the longhorn cows had this heifer calf yesterday. Nice weather, we missed the polar vortex by about 150 miles. Those longhorn calves are athletic. She can already run like a deer!

Yep. Right now, they are docking spotted calves like crazy. Bull is Angus, she should make a good easy keeping brood cow.

Anything that?s not a solid color or has a rat tail or hair swirled the wrong way on the forehead they?ll dock ya

Mean a little Dab of horn paste? Boy they hate that stuff. Really burns. Mostly caustic soda isn't it? Mix up a little draino. Can remember the little plastic bottle with that pink goop in it. Calfs would be banging their heads back and forth trying to get it off. Can remember one cow who grew a little sideways leaning stump. One day she wa outpicking on somebody and it uprooted. Wow did she bleed all over the darn place.

Jeffcat I remember growing up having to dehorn calves but everything i run anymore has been bred polled not even the little nubs but boy they will bleed when you dehorn sometimes If you get a little to deep or hit a vein just right. I?ve never used the paste

My dad used to do a little paste job. On them after a week or two before the little buttons got growing. After a few weeks a big hard scab would fall off. I can remember you could smell the chemical burning he hair. Phhheeeue! Make a puddle of the stuff about the size of a half dollar maybe. That is why think it was caustic soda. It will burn into you skin like that cause it binds to the oils and grease in your skin. The only thing that will stop it is lemon juice or some white vinegar. Don't dilly dally cause that caustic is mean stuff.

I always had polled Herefords, my ex father in law had a bunch of mixed cows, so he showed me how to use a dehorning iron, that was something, never used the paste.

[We used to breed the heifers longhorn years ago.Horned Hereford bulls on the cows.Always used a handsaw in the fall to take the horns off then we got a electric saw for dehorning sure made it a lot easier. No horns to do anymore.]

Our vet got us onto something nice a few years ago. It?s calked a Portasol. It?s a small butane burner and you can debud them when they?re a day old if you like. Only works if you can get hold of the calf without the mother trying to kill you lol. We use lidocaine nerve blocker too. Sometimes it freezes them good sometimes it doesn?t.

Recently sold a load of feeder calves 600 lbs. All were black or black white face except one, a 7/8th black angus 1/8 Simmental steer that happened to be brown, otherwise exact match to the others. They separated that steer and it brought $8.00 /100 less than the others.
