Flame thrower to kill weeds? Anybody seen this?

Yep,'flame weeding' is real. was more widely used in the 50s. There some organic farmers that still use that method. What I've been told, flaming adds 10 days to the maturity rating of corn.So,90 day corn becomes 100 day after flameing.

That is why I use that flame thrower thing that Harbor Freight sells. You don't need to burn a plant down just zap the leaves. Instanly breaks the cell walls in the leaf by flash boiling them. It is fun too.
weed control

Neighbor here in Ohio was doing that 50 years ago, quit probably 40 years ago. Would be in high 80's or possibly 90's now.

Boiling water and steam work too. Don't know how cost effective it is or if it is enough to kill plants with strong root systems.

I burns strong rooted weeds like canada thistle and quackgrass back, but they will just grow right back. No residual or systemic action.

Quite a few flame units locally used in the seed corn fields. As mentioned, you can alter the timing of plant maturity without killing it, to better synch up male or female varieties.

I investigated using flames in the vineyard to weed under the trellis, but never bought up the needed equipment. Roundup is just so easy.

Guy going organic across the road from me uses one. Last summer I saw the tractor going across the field and the operator was walking along behind the unit looking for something. Tractor was controlled by GPS. I though it was funny to see the operator behind the unit instead of on the tractor.

I?ve only seen pics of the big commercial units, but I?ve used a propane unit in my garden, bought it at a farm store long ago. If you don?t want to spray a lot of chemicals around, it?s better than pulling weeds by hand, and probably just as effective.

Yes its been around railroads used to do it along tracks. Look up burning low bush wild blueberries they did that a lot too.
