50 john deere not getting gas

Hope you all had a great Christmas.

I have a John Deere 50 tractor, my little work horse, great size for my acreage.
Recently it just seems to not be getting enough gas and will practically die when at
full throttle. Carb is adjusted well, so do not think that is the issue. My first
question is there a filter on top of the sediment bowl? Also is there any type of
filter where the fuel enters to carb? Would like your thoughts before I start
working on this.
Thanks

Yes there should be a filter screen that sits at the top of the sediment bowl. It is held in by the gasket.
Things to check.
#1 pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas that will fill a pint jar in less then 3 minutes and yes catch it to look for water/dirt etc. If lack of flow work your way back to the gas tank and see where the flow slows down. This past summer my Oliver S88 had a gas flow problem and I found some junk in the sediment bowl where the gas fill from the top. Cleaned that and all was well

This fall I have had several fuel flow issues that came back to having lady bugs in the gas tank. They will float over the sediment bowl inlet tube and shut the gas of or slow the flow.

As for screens. Old has told you about the one on top of the sediment bowl. There is a strainer in the carburetor. There are two carburetors used on the JD 50, single induction and dual induction. On the single barrel/induction there is a strainer right at by where the gas line hooks to the carb. It has a hex on top an is a little larger in diameter than a silver dollar. On the two barrel/dual induction the strainer is right by the fuel inlet too but is more of just a larger bolt that the bottom half is the screen. Maybe 7/8 hex that seals under the head.

Another thought I have is, does your JD 50 have the low oil pressure shut off system on it??? This would have been on serial number 5016133 and up. These can stop working correctly and slow the fuel flow rather than shutting it completely off.

Thanks appreciate the information and will check that out also.
I have the older model that does not have the low oil pressure shut off on it.

I had a grasshopper leg in my JD 50 fuel tank, and it drove me nuts until I found it. Same symptoms as you described. There was no cylindrical screen on the top of the sediment bowl inlet on my 50.

This is the little guy they are telling you about. Mounts into the throat of your setiment bowl. Solves all kinds of problems! Around $8.oo. Might be able to find it at an old NAPA store or such.

Thanks I was unaware there was one of these in there. Will I be able to remove that with just removing the sediment bowl?
Does that screw in or just set in, need to know to remove it. Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

One question, some of the pictures show a fuel filter that is a round flat disk that is the diameter of the sediment bowl.
Does the 50 have two filters by the sediment bowl? I will be taking it apart tomorrow, weather permitting.
Thanks

So there is also a filter where the fuel line goes into the carb? I saw a picture like this on
Yesterday's parts section.
9N9553 Carburetor Elbow & Strainer 9N9553
Guess the picture won't come through.
Thanks.

NO your JD carb. will not have the screen in the elbow like the one you pictured. Some other models did but not your JD 50.

In this picture you can see the brass hex on the screen retaining bolt. It is sticking straight up by the inlet fuel line.

In this second picture you can see the actual screen/bolt assembly and the flat sealing ring.
