Just purchased a restored 1959 John Deere 830 Rice Special. Looking to purchase a Heavy Duty Offset Disc. Does anyone have a recommendation on the size of a disc to purchase for an 830?s capabilities? I was thinking about a 12 ft heavy duty model. Western PA solid conditions. Help is greatly appreciated from experienced 830 owners! Thank you!

While a JD 830 was the big tractor for its time it really is not a very big tractor. About 70 drawbar HP. If your really talking about a DEEP tillage offset disk then you would be lucky to pull an 8 or 10 foot one. A 12 would be too much if you let it down very deep.

830's are stout, but they are NOT 12' heavy cutting disc stout. Growing up on the Tx. coast
in the rice country, I drove them when they were new, and have had at least one on hand for
40+ yrs. When we went from plowing to using heavy breaking disc, in the 60's, the 9'
Taylor-Way disc was popular. That disc was a load for a good 830, actually a overload. 930
Case's had the same issue pulling the 9'. Soil conditions would matter, but in my opinion
8'for a heavy cutting disc. You could pull a 12'-16' finishing disc w/o any problem.
We had a 830 on steel & added paddle extensions to the outside lugs....it gave up every
ounce of power it had.
