Rotary mower rear wheel

My flail mower has a roller to hold up the rear of the mower. The rear roller flattens the cut weeds. I wonder why the rotary mower doesn't have a back roller for support. My rotary mower cuts the weeds fine, but some times the field looks like a bad hair cut. If the mower had a rear roller it would flatten the weeds. Stan

Maybe that's why this flail mower has a rear roller? I always thought it was to prevent scalping, but maybe it's to press the corn stalks down so they rot faster.
