I gave the 49 Merc truck a little attention this past weekend. Still not much progress but at least the weather was nice.

Had a 72 Chevy 3/4 ton , with 3 piece slit rims, 17x7.50 tire /wheel combination. I found a regular set of 16? rims that would fit. Old rims had rusted, and one of the split rims flew a part while taking a turn off the main road , on to the gravel road.

I like the idea of a different wheel too but not smaller diameter. Bigger if anything as these old trucks are already geared down like a tractor. Need to be able to attach the original Mercury hubcaps though so that could be difficult. But that won't happen unless I get the truck into driving condition.
Good looking truck now and will be a sweet ride when your happy with what "your" truck looks and works like.
With the Mercury flathead you are good for 100hp [fords were 90hp], you can re-grind the vale seats for an easy 10+ hp, and
build hp from there if you wanted.
I do know that an easy seat fix is to put in a seat from a Ford Ranger[ not the new ranger..] it is the exact size as
original, except being 1 inch lower in seat back height.
I did convert my 48 to front disc brakes, for ease of mind and to end the white knuckle "please stop in time" syndrome.

I can't imagine this Mercury ever going fast enough to need anything more than the stock brakes. I've got another good seat (same as I put in the car) out of a Dodge Caravan to use if it ever gets to that point. As far as I can tell these Mercury trucks only had the Ford 239 engine. Not the Mercury 255. Hard to tell from the outside as the engines were pretty much identical.
