When you do your "ATF treatment" on an engine, just wondering if it matters what type of ATF you use. I want to do that on a tractor I'm getting. I've got a couple partial bottles of misc. ATF that I've accumulated over the years. I figured this would be a good way to get rid of them.

Just make sure when you fire it up, your engine is outside. ATF tends to smoke real good. The engine combustion cylinder does not care what
type of ATF you pour in there. Just remember fluid does not compress. Have the plugs out when first cranking the engine and rags over the
plug holes. Once it stops blowing fluid out, install the plugs and fire it up.

I've had good luck with a sort of "witches brew" using a combination of Diesel Fuel, Brake Fluid, and ATF to help free up a stuck engine versus just ATF. I don't think the type or brand of ATF used makes all that much difference...?..However if one is stuck badly or has been for a longgggggggggg time and there is pitting she gonna need a tear down and honing or worse....Be careful about stuck valves and bending pushrods or worse grrrrrrrrrrr

Thanks for the replies. This one is not stuck, but has been sitting a long time. I want to soak it a while so hopefully the rings will free up some before turning it over. I also plan to make sure no valves are stuck, etc. This will be a winter project--no hurry. In fact, it may be closer to spring before I actually try and fire it up.

If it has vertical exhaust pour as much ATF down the exhaust as it will hold with out leaking out. Doing that helps free up exhaust valves if there sticking and also cleans off carbon on the valves
