the carb in the B john deere is rusty and a real mess, i can get all the brass plugs and all other parts off. would it work to boil it in lye water to get the crusted gunk and rust off of it ?? or is there a better way ??? also need the float and spring that goes in the fuel bowl if someone has one for sale. it is a dlx34 shebler.

The float and spring can be purchased from Deere or Ebay. Muractic acid in a ice cream pail will clean the carb of it's rust. Don't leave it in very long. I always tie a wire to the carb to pull it out of the pail. The passage ways that you removed the plugs from should be cleaned out with a couple of drill bits. Size #40 and #53. The main nozzle should also be removed.

Lye water will work. Boil & rinse, then use tip cleaners if you don't have the drill bits. Blow it out good. Repeat about 3 times. The last boiling should be clean water. If not, repeat.

all i have ever used is the actual carburator "gunk" is the name of one brand. it dissolves the carbon build up within an hr. then rinse with cool water and blow out all passages. never had to be using drill bits or such. but its expensive so it better work... like about 60 or 70 dollars per gallon.
