Rebuilding '51 JD Model A Water Pump

This pump leaks constantly, but feels pretty tight. I can't find a kit, and am skeptical of what's available as new. I'd like to fix what I have. Any ideas finding a kit or having someone rebuild it for me?

Have you ever heard of https://cowboyjohnsautoparts.com/antique-car-rebuilding.html

I have to ask. Is it a factory pump that was added later as they did not put them on in 51 that fits in the bottom tank of the radiator or an aftermarket pump that is made to be installed in the bottom radiator hose? And there were 2 styles of them. If the aftermarket type go back in TT to 9-18 of this year and look for post topic Baker Valve and go to responce by Bob and in his link he has information on both aftermarket models and how they can be identified. My 51 A did not have a pump and after I had to have a new core put in it would overheat so then the Deere dealer installed a factory type pump. The new core was a 3 tube style and orignal was a 4 tube.

I haven't heard of the "Cowboy", so I can't comment on him.

I can say, though, there have have been a number of posts on here from guys who have been very satisfied with their dealings with the outfit linked below.

They will repair it or sell you the parts to do it yourself.

Leroy, You're right about the '51 not having a pump, this is news to me. My tractor is a 686,xxx, and according to the parts manual, pumps didn't come out until 700,200. The pump I have is apparently from a later model, because it bolts to the bottom tank.

Thanks for the lesson.

Brooks,

I have a life-long friend named Larry Lietzow in Mantua, OH, that is an expert on rebuilding water pumps. He gets in the nastiest junk from all over the country and even some stuff from outside the USA. He is a master machinist and would be able to make your pump like new. His phone number is
(303) 274-2426.

If you can't find something locally, you might try giving him a call.

I sent them my old bearings, an seals. They had the exact parts I needed. If you order parts, make sure you can get the impellor off first. If you brake that, it's all over. Stan

Why are you skeptical of a new water pump? I put a new one from A&I in my '52 model A, bolted right in, no messing around.

I got this pump apart without breaking anything, and what is inside doesn't look like what's in my Model A parts catalog. From the outside it looks alike, but the impeller and seal look different.

My impeller has veins on both sides and the surface around the shaft bore is smooth on both sides, the A4298R (shown to have been used in A's after 700,200) pump's impeller is smooth on one side with notches to locate the seal washer.

This may be an AM impeller because is doesn't have a JD part number, but has P219-2 cast into it.

From some pictures I've seen, several different pumps can bolt to this bottom radiator tank.

I'm just looking to replace the seal and bearing/shaft.

Any idea what tractor came with a pump that used an impeller like I described?

Did you check with the folks at the site I previously linked to see if they could help?

Bob, I did call them. They don't do too much with the old JD's now because so many parts are still available for them. He enlightened me a little with the fact that a lower tank and pump was available as a option (AA5646R) for the A's going back to serial number 584,000. Then I found that option in my parts catalog. I'm not sure that's what I have, but he's willing to look for parts if I send him pictures and dimensions. He's a very helpful guy who knows his parts.
Thanks for the lead.
