So a few days back I saw a Leyland tractor,
years ago I knew of a farm that had a
machine of this brand, was they any good
and was it built in the USA? Just wondering

They were exported from overseas. There use to be gaggles of them in the late seventys and eightys but most are all gone. The serial number tags said british leyland made in scotland. They were nothing special I had four neighbors that had them. One neighbor was struggling with plowing even with full rack of weights and weights hanging of frame rails he was still staring at the sky.Cooling system was to small. He got rid of his purchased 756 german diesel and 4 bottom plow and never looked back. The other neighbor his was still sitting in the weeds as it didn't sell at his auction. The others dissapeared.Scott

I think Marshall bought them out and continued using the engines in JCB backhoes and equipment. I have one junked, looks like a poor design to me.

I have a BIL who bought one new in the late 70's.. It's have very little work over it's life time
he had a small beef operation.. Tractor still runs well, but so does his 1940 Farmal H.

Dad bought one after his IH 606 quit. It was a 270 and a bit big for our small hobby farm. Used it for the making hay and plowing snow. Never saw a plow or disc.
Dad didn't like how "busy" it was. Too many levers and sequences of things to fiddle with. He never showed me how to operate it (other than starting and gear shifting). It's taken me a while to figure it out. I like the diesel - starts nice.

I've heard their rear-ends are strong. Some guy said the Nuffield engines were better so people would match the orange front to the blue back for a better overall machine.

Is that the engine used in the little Leyland 154? I know where you could get one for a song, and sing it yourself. Western Washington.

Nope according to what I can find the Leyland 255, 270 and 462 all used the 4/98 Leyland.

I have two,384 and 270,built in Basildorf Scotland, about 1970 and imported thru Miller Supply ,St Nazianz WI as cheaper power. One carried two 200 gal saddle tanks and was my sprayer and planter tractor for years. Now I just use it for mowing fence rows and spraying.Comparable to 5000 Ford ,60 hp,quieter ,less torque ,and both have Simms injector pump with start button(start very good when cold).uses less fuel than Ford and goes 25 mph down the road.Older style rear with disc brakes and second clutch pto.Comfortable to drive.
