Never understood why they were so popular. Couldn't pull the hat off your head with them. Poor PTO system with the Pto having to be in gear to lift the 3 Pt. Might be simple but crude as well. I'll Take my H or M instead.
 
I'll take a stab.
Utility. No, not as strong a puller as many (most) other tractors but handier than many for a wider range of jobs. Their form factor became the norm for small tractors to this day.
Affordability. Back then a huge percentage of farms were small. Many farmers could afford only one tractor and Ford handled the price wars better than some.
Reputation. Those farmers had seen the advent and rise of popularity of Ford cars and trucks. Ford was seen as being for the common man...even if it were not necessarily true.
Dealer network. Huge dealer network.

Yes, they had issues. No argument. They did solve them eventually but then the Select-O-Speed debacle came along.
My favorite? No but I can see why they did so well.

You have this tractor confused with the 9N/2N/8N Fords.
