A city not too far from us has already banned plastic bags, plastic take out plastic food boxes, no smoking in public places, Now they are going after wood burning fire places, and stoves. New homes are to have natural gas fire places, remodeled homes with fire places are required to convert fire places to natural gas. Our city has already banned plastic bags, and take out boxes. It will not be very long maybe not in my life time but no wood burning of any kind will be allowed anywhere. It's a wonder back in the beginning when all that was used for heat and cooking was wood. It's a wonder we are still alive. Has any or your states started having issues using coal or wood for heat? Stan

New York has had no public smoking for quite a long time now. DEC (the state environmental agency) has imposed restrictions on wood burning units but older units are grandfathered in as not to comply. New York is due for a hard jerk to the left so I see more restrictions in the future. The race for Governor here is interesting and not outside of the realm of possibility to get someone who will push an agenda.

Poorly managed fires, poorly constructed wood burners, or the outside wood boiler, have ruined wood burning in areas around me. That thick creamy smoke can get pretty bad in certain areas around me in SW Michigan.

in Washington state they have banned plastic straws and shopping bags but its ok for the houseless to poop on the side walk no law being broken there

Imagine every house using a fire place. both as ambiance, and a % of heat. There would be three very interesting outcomes: Way bad smoke hanging in the air, Clear Cut regional forests (if any), and radical price increases in the price of cord wood. Jim

Freedom only goes as far as your neighbor's fence. The more people there get to be, the less freedom there can be. Things that didnt matter on a small scale start to matter as it is scaled up. Have often wondered if we may be seeing the best of times.

I don't know any of the details of this, but one of my neighbors is a "Greenie". He built a new home that has two wood burning fireplaces in it. According to him, he has catalytic converters built into the chimneys for both fireplaces.

I have no idea if it helps or how he maintains them, but that's what he claims to have.

In most urban and suburban areas that makes a lot of sense.

Myself, I'm much more worried about the new round of tariffs than any restrictions on plastic bags or fireplaces. I doubt many consumers or businesses will get a 10 percent refund on their purchases to offset the new tariffs.

(quoted from post at 08:50:26 09/19/18) The tax and spend folks would love to outlaw any wood burning appliances, due to the fact that they can't control or more importantly, tax the fuel.
Pete
Exactly
And the lawmakers are getting more $$ in their pockets from the fossil fuel and power companies to outlaw wood heat.
