Another article I just read in the Lancaster Farm Newspaper was about apples,

For over 50 years Red Delicious apples have been the top U.S. Apple by production volume.

This year Gala Apple production is projected to hit 52.4 million pounds, while Red Delicious will likely fall to 51.7 million pounds, according to the U.S.Apple Association.

They say consumers like Galas taste, texture, and sweetness, while growers appreciate its relative ease of growing and productivity.

Ron,
Honey Crisp is our favorite too. We have a tree south of our barn... and when mowing, we will each grab an apple to munch.

Darn Asian beetles love to eat them.

We we're in Sprouts this evening, lots of varieties of apples! We got gala

Can't remember what those dad got one year. They were bigger than a softball and sweet. Ate a lot of them while cutting beans that fall. Didn't keep real long though.
Don't care for Gala's or the honey crisp. For eating and cooking it's mac's.

When I was a kid the neighboring farm had what they called a banana apple tree . They were big yellow apples and very soft and sweet. Years later I planted a winter banana apple tree, not the same at all.
