John deere 310c too much fuel

I have a 310c john deere that smokes white and smells like raw fuel for about 15 minutes after that it smoothes out a little. But still smells like it is dumping too much fuel. I have had trucks do this and it has been injectors. Is that where I should start here?

When was the last time you checked the air filter?? I know a guy who complained that this diesel tractor was not running as it should and I pulled the air filters out and drop them on a piece of plywood and well they left a big pile of dust on the plywood. Replaced the filters and all was well

I would check the injection pump timing first. Sounds like it is retarded from worn drive gears in the pump drive train which happens from normal wear. It is just incomplete combustion in a cold engine and will go away when its warmed up.

If you are mechanically inclined, you can loosen the 3 injection pump mounting bolts and twist the pump slightly (1/8 inch) toward the engine to slightly advance the timing, then retighten.

Or if you want to do it by the book, place a pin in the flywheel at TDC and take the timing window off of the injection pump and see if the marks line up. If not, then loosen the pump mounting bolts and twist the pump one way or the other until the two marks line up, then retighten the mounting bolts. Don't forget to take the pin out of the flywheel and put the cover back on the timing window.

Yes and when they get that way it is a wonder how the engine ran let alone would pull them self's

(quoted from post at 17:29:30 09/17/18) I'd start with a compression check. If it gets better warm I doubt it's injectors but low compression heat. Could also verify timing is set right too.

Ok what should compression be on these?

From the brochure, it was 17.8:1 compression ratio from the factory:

17.8x14.696 atmosheric psi at sea level = should be about 261 psi when it was a new engine.
