What were they spraying

I just got home after helping my son in law work on his house. He lives south of Jackson MI. While I was there a large self propelled sprayer came and sprayed a field of soy beans near his house. I am curious as to what they were spraying on soy beans at this time of year. The field was still green. Anyone know/
Thanks,Ted

my guess is defoliant to knock the leaves off so they can combine early. they use to do that around here but seems to have fallen out of favor.

A guy just did that around here as the weeds got away from him late in the season. I would guess as to the reason it is done infrequently is that more elevators test for herbicide content in the seed. The local one has from time to time tested for the presence of glyphosate so maybe in your area they are testing for that as well as for gramoxone.

Aragon. DESSICANT to dry down some of the weeds and the bean plant to aide in harvest. Based on the weedy fields around here,(esp. Mine☹) there will be a lot used this fall.

The seed corn growers near us are spraying some fields, they call it "salt"- desiccates the plant to move up harvest. Done for timing purposes more than anything with seed corn. Not sure how they handle seed beans.

In my neck of the woods, the Co-Op has a rig that looks very much like a field sprayer, but it is used to apply fertilizer. And this year, about two weeks before soy beans are harvested, you can get the Co-Op to come in and put down wheat seeds in the standing bean crop. As soon as the beans are harvested, the now already sprouted wheat, can jump start and grow like crazy before winter.
