Son in law has the opportunity to buy back a tractor that was owned by his dad. MF 65. His dad died when he was 8. His mother sold it because she thought it was too clumsy and replaced it with a Ford 860. When she sold the 65 it was a private transaction. The buyer got in contact with the family 25/26 years later, says he's planning on selling it and if offering it to someone in the family first.

So the big question is "anything to look out for"?

Thanks

Rick

If it has a wide front, the pivot bushings are pretty thin when new. Mine were worn through and egged out the casting. That would be a costly repair unless you can do it yourself.

If it has power steering, the pedestal bushings need to be in pretty good shape. New bushings are shipped undersized and need to be line bored after installation. That can be done with a heavy hand drill IF you have the boring bar like a dealer would have had back in the day.

Brakes are not the easiest to replace. It is not a difficult job but is time consuming.

Great tractor though in my opinion. Cut my teeth on a 65 and still use it often.

You only get one chance to by back a family tractor. Condition has very little to do with it.

Still wish I had my old MF65 Diesel. pivot bushings and steering linkage nothing bad as long as it was
taken care of. The people I sold it to put a disc mower on it tore it up. hit a stump tore the lift link
and bent the pto shaft. Was never right after that.

Uncle bought a new MF 65 in the fall of 57 just before silo filling time. First new tractor I got to drive.

If our family had a tractor that I
had an opportunity to buy
condition would be last thing on
my mind. Opportunity like that
doesn't happen often!!

I have to agree. HE has 3 brothers. Wife and I are thinking that if no one wants it we will buy it and give it to our grand daughter......
