OT Grandpa pulling my leg?

Grandpa's neighbor Nathaniel had a very strange tree in his front yard. Grandpa said it had been planted upside down - roots in the air. Feasible?

A pic would help.

I "have" heard of folks who would plant certain trees roots up. Don't know why or which variety. Heard it long, long ago.

I will tell you that in the spring when willow trees are just budding up. Cut a bunch of whips and stick them in wet ground. Most of them will grow! Even better pick up a bottle of rooting hormone. Dip the cutting in and then stick it in the ground. Mother nature can really pull out all of the stops. PS. raspberrys work too.

The hybrid poplar/cottonwood that we planted are reproduced that way. Cuttings are taken in the winter and kept frozen until spring, then planted, but the buds should be pointed up.

I was always amazed that willow trees come up volunteer around stock tanks here in Texas within a month or so after digging a new tank. No clue how they get started.
