so many antifreezes/coolants

Had a thought about antifreeze/coolant today. I know there is more than one type/color/etc. So while I was at my NAPA store, I asked and they gave me a reference chart. Holy smokes - you need to be an engineer to sort this all out! Wait a minute, I am an engineer and I'm blown away by how many choices there are.

What are some types you use in say your new or modern combine or new or modern diesel tractor? I suppose your Operator's Manual gives you the recommended stuff to use?

I think I'll just use the old green stuff in my older 2 cylinder John Deere.

Any cooling systems that I need to refill get changed to Deere Coolguard II. It is generally compatible with most applications. Not the cheapest there is, but widely available

I think recently they have changed antifreeze. They claim on the bottle it's suppose to last five years but I'm having to flush the engine and change the antifreeze a couple times a year.

couple years ago I was looking at some antifreeze at a local store. the manager was helping me. they had 3/4 different brands. while I was talking to him he told me they all were made at the same place. he told me the 50/50 mix was the worst thing to buy because it was actually 30 percent higher than the pure stuff. the 50/50 was 7.99/ pure stuff was 9.99.

I use a universal extended life coolant, it is gold with a slight green tint. This coolant can mix with all types and is an ELC too. The colors don't necessarily tell you what type of coolant it is, it is more of a brand identification. If you want to try to do the best, then use distilled water too.

On what basis? Tests bad? Discolored? Gunk?

Sounds like something else is wrong, unless you drive 200K/year...

Curious, why you feel this is necessary? What about the coolant is going bad?

I use the old green stuff in my old gas tractors, but I use the NAPA purple fleet coolant in my diesel tractors. I had a sleeve cavitate on my Oliver 1755 a few years ago and it cost me a motor rebuild, so I use the good stuff and get it tested every year.

Corrosion inhibitors. You will more than likely see the effects after about 20 years when its to late to reverse the effect...

Just use the waterless, and don't worry. Lasts forever, and only $50 per gallon. No I haven't tried it, but sounds intriguing.

Prestone makes a yellow coolant that is supposedly compatible with everything. I usually flush the system and refill with the Prestone yellow. My older tractors and really old trucks get "conventional" green coolant. I have much more confidence in it than I do Dex cool, or Mopar Oat.
