How did they get my info

My savings account was -8,500.00 since yesterday. Got everything stopped. Wells Fargo is going to put the money back in my account. Which is good, but how many times a day does this happen to the bank, before the go broke? Do the scammers have me targeted, and will they do this again. If that was not replaced I would have to cut a lot of weeds to make up that money. Watch out our out there, the bottom feeders are alive and prospering on our weaknesses. Stan

Not back into the same account, I hope. At least close that account and open another one, preferably at a different bank. And see if Wells Fargo can maybe figure out what happened.

One of the biggest sources of info theft happens at the gas station.
The card reader at the pump is very vulnerable to ?skimming? ; a ?stick on? reader is placed over the legitimate reader and records your card details as you pay. The card info can then be recovered by the ?Bad Guys? and used later.
Try to always use the pretty lady in the cabin, it may be slower but it is safer ! Otherwise check the card reader for any looseness or tampering.

Wasn't Wells Fargo involved in fleecing some people a few years back ? Maybe I got the wrong place ?
Get it back and go buy some more tractors with it !

Coming from a savings account, with no debit or cc attached to it I assume, does sound like something went wrong on the banks end.

Could have easily been a mistake, and that they readily agreed to fix it pretty much confirms it. But could have been another one of those bank errors that are always in their favor for some strange reason...

Never had to go through it, but whenever there is a legitimate fraud claim, the bank will investigate first, find out where it went, and ask if you are willing to press charges against the person. So many times it turns out to be a desperate family member.

I would still open a new account. Possibly your account number is real close to someone else who wrote it wrong, made the withdrawal, and the teller never noticed.

(quoted from post at 15:29:01 09/12/18) This was removed from my savings account. Almost looks like an inside job. Stan
And there is no type of plastic card involved?
credit, debit, savings, etc?
And no other name on the account but yours?

Had pre-printed deposit slips made lately ?

Chief,

I recently had $550.00 fraudulently withdrawn from my checking account at an ATM in Knoxville, TN. I haven't been in Knoxville for 20 years or more. This was from an account that I have in a local, hometown bank in Spring Hill, TN. What puzzles me is that the thief somehow knew my PIN to enable him/her to take it from an ATM.

The bank was great. They had the money back in my account in less than a week and issued me a new debit card.

Haven't heard any more about it. Strange.

Someone could also have obtained a statement of the account from your garbage.
Anybody on the street, the garbage workers, someone downstream from there.
Had anybody visit that might have seen your statement laying around and took advantage?

According to an article in 11 Sept issue of Washington Examiner by Paul Bedard. Between 2012-2016, there were 39 MILLION instances of tax filings where name and Social Security number did not match......primarily due to stolen Social Security numbers and identity theft.

the one thing that have happened to me was a hidden camera where I fuel got my card and pin # my bank stop a transaction in conn. I'm in Washington state.

also we get a lot of mail stolen out of our boxes out in the country all important bills are on line , don't know if that's any better though

a friend of mine youngest daughter started a job at a bank in Penna. she was working along with 4 other tellers very young girls

i called and was talking with my friend and asked how his daughter was doing with her new job and my friend says oh she's doing fine she is the head teller now, man 6 weeks and she is head teller!!!!!!!

it seems the other 4 girls were fired for stealing money from the bank!
and the way they pulled it off was a comedy of errors..

I can agree with that. My wife had a savings account 2000.00. The week she died the money came up missing. I didn't know she had an account. Until I went through some papers she had. They claimed I took it.

Savings account, hmm. That is interesting. Unless the account is hooked as a backup to a checking account (that is still good right?) then it would be tougher than a debit/pin theft. I guess like anything if they have the right numbers they can do what they want. Look at things like paypal or square. You can have it setup to deposit/remove money from account. When I set up a square account all I had to do was provide name, dob, address and a bank account. 10 seconds later, account confirmed and I can start with drawing/depositing money. Kind of scary how easy it is actually.

I've heard a few times the best way to steal someone's identity is find an underpaid person who works at a Dr office. They have access to everything, DOB, SS#, address.

I think it may have been on 60 minutes, a person at a Dr office was getting paid $10 for your identity.

I'm not sure how good it is to have lifelock, $100/year. I do know if I apply for a new credit card, with in seconds I get an alert on my phone from Lifelock wanting to know if it was me? That feel it's worth $100.

Does anyone here have Lifelock and had their identity stolen? Do they stand behind their $1,000,000 warranty?

I have had Life Lock for several years. Never had a problem. It is weird when you change a bank account around and they call you as you are sitting in the chair in the bank!

My accounts got computerized 3/2016 and 5/2016 the bank told me it was a inside job in most all cases... Who ever it was went on a shopping spree and sent me a $700 drone actually they ordered two from best buy in my name best buy would not tell me were the other one was shipped to.

I kept the drone for a year and sold it now before someone get's unset I offed to send it to them if they sent a return shipping label with a few other stipulations to guarantee I would not be liable for the drone.

Best buy sent it to a collection agency I replied with the info I had and still offed to return the drone I never got any response so after setting on the drone for a year I sold it...

My sister had to file bankruptcy due to wells fartco. Her account got drained, twice. Online purchases at a place called modern African male. Going through their process the second time, when it happened the second time, so they determined she wanted free clothing. Yeah, men's clothing won't fit her. Her lawyer was sending out a cease and desist letter every 4 to 6 days they were turning it in to so many collections agencies.

What they got in trouble for was opening unauthorized accounts. When they took over another bank here, they started holding deposits for a week and nailing people with overdraft fees. I don't know how the branch is still open. Everyone went elsewhere.

My sister went to another bank, and gets a call about every other month about a fraudulent transaction.

It's pretty simple. People working in the bank are stealing it themselves or as someone else mentioned selling that info. The other way it happens is they hack in someplace. Doesn't have to be your bank that got hacked. Could be a say your power company where you have auto pay set up. Few years ago they hacked into a lot of info for anyone who is a vet and dealing with VA, they stole SSN's and a bunch of other info. The only real way to protect yourself is to deal in case only. Kinda hard to do anymore but that's it.

You can check this site to see if/how your email has been compromised:
https://haveibeenpwned.com/

The guy that runs the site (Troy Hunt) is a security junkie that does consultation for big firms and is often able to identify threats through proliferation of data in the dark web before companies even know they've been compromised.

He is an interesting guy that has done some cool Ted Talks as well, but don't watch them unless you want to be scared. ;)
