OT-Windows XP Vista

The Firefox browser is no longer supported in Windows XP and Vista
which means that there will be no security or other updates.
The only secure browser for these operating systems at this
time is Opera.
Firefox Calls it Quits

I have an old Dell PC used as a back-up.

It runs IE 11 and has had no updates since MS dumped it a few years ago. At that time, both Windows Defender and MS security Essentials were automatically disabled. I've been running it that way for the last 3 years or so without issues.

Recently, I bought a Mcafee site license for all of my stuff. It installed on the Vista machine without issue, updates, and runs fine.

The problem will be that you won't be able to
access secure web pages with those browsers
from XP & Vista.
Norton Antivirus still supports XP also.

"I've been running it that way for the last 3 years or so without issues."

Without issues that you know of, that is.
Hopefully, you're not doing any banking or shopping on that PC.
I would not connect any computer to the internet without antivirus
protection. Especially not if it's connected to my home wifi/network
where it could potentially infect the other computers on that network.

You did say it had IE 11 though, so that means it is at least a
Window 7 operating system, in which case you shouldn't have any
problem finding a current antivirus program.
IE 11 is still included in Windows 10. For how long remains to be seen.

I don't get it
is there a antique computers site
Cheaper than the antivirus workaround
$55 online
HP DC 5800 Small Form Factor Core 2 Duo Dual Core 3.00GHz 4GB 1TB DVD Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit WiFi 19" LCD

oh but that's right it's suggested you not go online due to security concerns

maybe it's all the past frustrations that set hard against change
google windows10 computer refurbished
the numbers of them at $100 or below will astound you

And something you may not realise
I use chrome as my browser and a number of it's tools and related extensions or apps without charge or fee
it allows me weather I am on my computer
the one at the library
or my buddies
all I do is log into google and the computer I am on is in so many ways is just like the one I use everyday at home
with all my accounts addresses histories and favorites
just remember to log out

If you think you or your money are safe and
secure on any computer, you are sadly
mistaken. Watch the news crooks crack
security with ease, then we update, and
hope they didn't hit us before we updated.

The last new computer in this household was bought in 2007, my Wife went and bought it without my knowledge and it was running Vista. I've been piecing together bits and pieces of old computers for years. I had Linux Ubuntu installed on it long before Microsoft stopped supporting Vista. I set it up to be a dual boot system, I can boot it into Vista or Ubuntu.

My old Dell that I got out of a lawyers office is what I've been using for years and I had it just the way I liked it, running fast on Ubuntu. It just decided that it was time to go, I've got it narrowed down to one of 2 things that failed on it, the motherboard or the processor went to crap. So I'm working on another Dell that I bought off the state. I'll be happy when I get it pu and going so I don't have to look at this tiny screen on this laptop, 15 inch. I have three operating systems on this laptop, Ubuntu, Ubuntu Studio and KX Studio, a triple boot laptop.

I don't really much like MS Windows, Microsoft's view is that they own your computer if their software is on it.

Ive been running a dual boot windowsUbuntu pc for 15 years. I rarely use windows. It just works and i dont have to reboot all the time like i did with windows. I have 3 computers that i have set up that way. I will never go back.

It's one thing to have a computer with an obsolete operating system just for the (really small) grand kids to play games on and unhooked to the web. If you are using a computer with an unsupported operating system on the web, you are asking for trouble. The hackers and scammers are just waiting for you.
Just yesterday, my wife mentioned that there are people who were using wire transfers to put a $50,000 down payment down on a house and they got hacked and their money simply disappeared. Well, that's not quite accurate. Their money simply disappeared for their bank account and they couldn't get it back.
As mentioned you can use Ubuntu on an obsolete computer and limp it along for a couple more years. If you are uncomfortable or unable to install this OS, perhaps your local high school computer science teacher would help. Running VISTA on the internet is a potential time bomb.

I am up against the same thing. I tried downloading ubuntu a couple of days ago so I could do the dual boot thing, but the download failed. I may try it again, or I may not.

Maybe, I'm lucky. I am careful.

Once I installed MacAfee, I waited a couple of weeks and ran a full scan. Took 3 days but found nothing.
