How to not kill a tree

A large pine tree has an abandoned tree stand chained to it. The bark has grown over the chain. If a person attempted to remove the chain, will that kill the tree? On the other had, if the tree is harvested, the chain would or could wreck someones equipment. So should it be removed, regardless of the consequences?

My BIL was a logger, had cut-to-length equipment. If there was any indication of a deer stand in a tree he wouldn't touch it, not worth the risk to his equipment. If the chain isn't completely covered you might try to get it out, a healthy pine tree will heal itself.

I can tell you this much, white oak is worth a fortune because of the need for it for whiskey barrels. I sold some timber a year ago and had one nice white oak. They wouldn't touch it because it had tree stand steps screwed in to it.
My guess is,if they saw a scar from that chain, they wouldn't touch your pine either.

Several of those guys I have delt with use really powerful magnets and also handheld metal detectors. They found a couple of fence nails about waist high but they had no problem with the tree though.

Cut the chain off as carefully as you can with as few scars to the bark of the tree. Like your body that tree is alive and it will heal given time. There are numerous trees here on my place that could tell their own tale of damage and then healing.
