Hi all,
Does anybody have any hints on gasket making? I have a few Solex 30 FV carbs to kit out on my Cropmasters. I have been using a 8oz ball pein and some punches, but it is a bit tricky.
Thanks!
Joshua

I have, but that gasket is not the right one I'm needing, and also I paid $16 NZD all up for a roll of paper, and I can make dozens of gaskets with it!
I appreciate your suggestion!
Thanks,
Joshua

Hi,try David Brown tractor parts (Peter Williams) here in the UK. He sends parts to other members of this site in the USA and Canada. Whereabouts are you ? MJ

You can set a set of what I'd call cutting hollow punches that will cut different size round holes and then I just use things like a box knife, razor blade, scissors etc to cut out the
gasket.

A shim punch and die set works well for getting holes where you need them.

The gasket goes between the upper and lower guides, look down through the hole, get it in position, punch it out.

I always have gasket material on hand as I hate wasting half a day going to town to pay way too much for something that takes 10 or 15 minutes to make.

Rub the metal surface with a pencil then press down hard onto the gasket paper to transfer the outline.

Get a block of hard wood to use under the gasket paper when you punch the holes.

Cut the small holes first then the bore hole, last step is always the outside shape.
This leaves you with more to hold onto and less chance of tearing something you do not want to.
Scissors work well for the outside cut, many applications leaving the outside cut a little bigger than the original is fine and if desired the excess can be sliced off with a razor knife after assembly.

Small razor knife or carving set blades work well for cutting out bore hole.

You can photocopy a gasket for a template.

If you are using the hammer tap to cut method do a couple of bolt holes first then put bolts in the holes to keep the paper in alignment while you do the rest of it.

In a pinch cereal boxes, uncoated light cardboard, place mats, even the light cardboard that gasket sets come in can all be used as material.

Determined, the only addition I'd make to your assorted tools is a cheap Dollar Store scissor type paper punch. Used judiciously it can make an awful lot of the necessary cuts. gm
