Use what you got!

I bought this 845 New Holland baler a while back. Not long after, I noticed the output shaft from the gearbox had been broken off and goober welded back on. The shaft was so out of alignment, it was destroying the inner splines on the cross shaft that coupled to it. It was obvious that both the gearbox and cross shaft were junk. I got to thinking if there was a universal joint in the shaft, it might work. I cut the solid shaft off and spliced in part of an old PTO shaft from my scrap pile. Do you think it will hold? I don't know yet, but all I am out is a few rods and a couple hours.

Where will the shaft go when/if it breaks?

No doubt in my mind what would happen if I tried to run that! Get out the check book! LOL

I think I would have cut the old shaft off right where it was goober welded and goober welded it back a little closer to straight first. You didn't mention the RPM this turns. Low speed it may hold up for a long time.

Your idea in using what you have is good untill the day you have some perfect hay all ready to bale and it is calling for rain that night and your baler breaks leaving you with junk hay after the rain. Find a used one off a parts baler and keep this one in case that one ever breaks. Tom

X's 2. A gearbox off a junk baler should be reasonable. Save that one for an emergency. I've replaced the output shaft on a Case 8465A cheaply getting a gearbox off a junked baler.
