I purchased a 841DS tractor.
Does the S designate a Sherman transmission?

Tractor has hole where a Sherman shifter should be.
Hole had a steel plug in it

Yes.
The S means the tractor came with a factory
installed Sherman.
My best pal Kenny has that same tractor.
It is a sweetheart.

Can I look through the hole where the shifter should be and see if it has a Sherman?

Chances are, with the shift lever gone and plug there, the Sherman was taken out at some point. You might be able to see in there,
maybe use a flashlight.
