First let me say I know nothing to very little about the stuff. So I ask my brother who is the manager of the local feed store. Been there since 1998. I also asked ten local farmers. They all use the stuff. They all agree this is nothing more. Than a group trying to get rid of a cheaper product. So they can sell a more expensive one to make more money. Nothing but a money grab.

They have used 303 for years with no problems. Another ban for nothing I think.

The local farm and home store Orscheln's has a replacement oil that comes In a yellow and green bucket and sells for around $27 but if on sale for around $20. Pretty much looks the same and smells the same and not much higher then the 303 fluid was

Anyone can use whatever they like in their own equipment and should do so.

I do not and will not use the cheap 303 stuff in any of mine.

Billy the oil that was banned was not around more than several years. It says right on it that it should not be used in a lot of equipment. So your polling group may very well have used 303 oil but not the oil being banned. The banned oil has failed testing for how it is rated.

Thanks JD as I said I know nothing about it. I am not a farmer. It just didn't make sense to. I saw nothing on a container of it that looked bad. All the farmers I talked to are older guys. Been around for years so I feel I can trust what they say. As one of them said. The government is always wanting to ban something. Money talks.

Are you sure "banned" is the word to use? Perhaps obsolete would be a better word. If it becomes banned, I shall hide mine in the belly pump of my Farmall M

The ban is just for retailers in a couple states. They can no longer sell it in their stores. You would be fine going to another state and buying all you want for your own use.

Just my opinion, but I think "303" is a trade-marked John Deere thing. Mother Deere intervened and made them stop using that name, or start paying royaltys.

Removed in some states due to the fair labeling law. 303 was a jd spec that replaced type A (20wt) crudely distilled hydraulic fluid. It called for sperm whale oil (better viscosity properties) which was banned in a international treaty around 1978. You can not sell whale oil, and you cannot sell the substitute product under the law as it does NOT contain whale oil. The substitute oil contains a newer mineral base oil refined and additives to exceed the properties of the sperm whale oil. So they are having to pull it and re-label it, to meet the fair labeling act.

SO>. .you cant sale whale oil and you cant sell under the 303 spec that calls for whale oil.

Oh boo hoo. An conspiracy theory that Goverment and industry are all set to suppress dangerous people like you.
As previously stated the problem is trademark and cheapskates using substandard 303 in later equipment that require Hy-Gard.

No need to jump me. I was just asking a question. I am not a farmer don't have any equipment. Will never have any. Just trying to
learn. But yes I do think money talks in many ways.

303 works in instances where basic 20w nondetergent oil would be used as hydraulic fluid. We use it in the hydraulic systems of our Takeuchi skid steers and change it every two years - some of them have over 10,000 hours on them without a hydraulic failure. I would never use it in place of a hytran spec.

THAT makes perfect sense.

Everything is automatically a conspiracy to grab money. If you didn't have the money grabbing corporations manipulating the government to rage about, you'd have no reason to get out of bed in the morning.

Best answer I've heard yet and one that makes the most since.
I've used 303 in my older equipment for years with no noticeable effects.
It says on the bucket not to use it in newer equipment and I don't.

I am slowing changing everything over to the supposedly higher grade hyd oil just for commonality, another $10 per bucket is cheap insurance.

Interesting.............you should contact these guys as they claim the spec is unknown.
Since you know what the spec is, you could be a hero to the industry and sell what you know for millions.

Quoted: "The John Deere (JD) 303 designation is 57 years old and has been obsolete for 43 years. In addition, there are no specifications available for 303 THF, and as such products making only “303” claims cannot be tested to assure compliance with any known specifications. Because of this, in the interest of protecting consumers, the State of Missouri ordered that “303” THF cannot be sold in the state."
