I have a Ford 3000. I last drove it a few months back when i parked it was running. So i take a hot battery and put itin all i get is a smoking negative terminal and a click noise so i replaced the starter which was pricey still the same thing. Any help would be appreciated

No matter what the smoke is coming from there is a bad connection there. So it may not have needed either component. It might
need a cable, ot just clean and shiny where the connection is located. Jim

I am new to this site so hopefully u get this reply. The ground is going on the starter where it attaches to the tractor I will check the ground again and get back with you. Thanks again

That's a good place to connect the ground wire.
As far as I know, it's not original though, so someone before you had the same issue.
I agree with Jim. You have a bad connection somewhere or a bad cable.
Welcome to the forums!

Those are great, small tractors.
Bullet proof.
Generally, you should tell us if it's a gas
or diesel though in this case as the others
have said it's probably your ground cable.
Not uncommon to see one corrode inside where
the cable connects to the battery clamp.
Ground normally hooks to one of the bolts
that hold the starter in.
If you have a diesel I would spend the extra
dough for a Good cable - 0 or 00 wire size
and not the cheesy, cheap jobs that you get
at your local auto parts store.
Also, insure that your battery cables do not
get pinched behind the swing out battery
tray. There have been more Fords of that era
burn up from pinched battery cables than any
other cause. See photo.
Lastly, there is a Very Good Ford forum here
at Yesterday's Tractors.
Best to ask your Ford questions there.

As Jerry said, the hood when closed, likes to rest the flanged frame or support piece right across the positive cable, and it can wear through the insulation. I placed the insole for a shoe over it and you can see the indentation it leaves, but that protects it from contacting the actual cable insulation. You can line it up each time after the flange leaves a mark. On our 3600, I took old garden hose and made a sleeve by slitting it and wrapping the cable, because I feared it being in the barn could be a fire hazard. Bad design, but the swing out battery tray sure is handy !
