Just wandering if any of you guys were using a mower caddy and if so do you think it was worth the investment. Would you recommend a particular brand. Any advantage to having the tires staggered or have them in line? Thanks for the advice, just kinda pondering the idea of purchasing one because the ease of hook up.

Disc mower caddy advantages are as follows:
easier to attach to tractor
mower follows ground contours better
one can transport disc mower with pickup truck

disadvantages: cost $$$$

staggered wheel type caddy slides tires in turns,in line tire caddy disc cutter sets further behind tractor

Ease of hookup.

Used to be, I would almost rather take a whipping than hook up the disc mower to the 3-point.

With the caddy, I just smile.

Also gets the weight off of the back of the tractor.

Thanks for the replies fellows. That's what I was expecting to hear. I'm like Fred, I would rather take a beating and go on about my day than to aggravate with the cutter.

If you have a good 3 point disc mower and only need the caddy that would be the way to go.
If you looking at replacing or simply buying a new disc mower along with a caddy you might want to look at a trailed disc mower.
A new 3 point mower and caddy will cost the same as a trailed unit.
You get a longer life from a trailed mower, there's less stress on the bar because it's supported on both ends.

I was looking at purchasing a new mower in 2014, I have owned and used a old 80's model Claas trailed mower for many years. I'd also used and hooked up my FIL's 3 point disc mower, when I found the price of a 3 point mower and caddy was the same as a trailed unit I never even looked at a 3 point mower.

Kuhn and Vermeer are the only brands I found that offer models under 10 ft wide, I can pull my Kuhn GMD2850TL 9 ft mower with a 50 hp tractor but my heavier 60 hp tractor handles it a little better.
Vermeer makes trailed disc mowers in 8 ft widths also if your looking for a smaller mower.

Having owned and used trailed mowers I'll never own a 3 point model.

I agree about trailed type disc mower BUT if one already owns a 3 pt disc mower then a caddy is a good option plus older 3 pt DM can be traded for a new DM utilizing same caddy. Another advantage is DM on caddy has a narrower transport width than trailed DM

My first sentence said if you already had a good mower a caddy would be the way to go.
There's 2 different styles of caddies, ones that lift the mower and ones that don't, different mowers require different caddies. I guess one could get a caddy that lifts and not use the lift if it's not needed, but I'm only guessing.
Transport width is important to me on our narrow county roads, another reason I wanted a mower 9 ft or less, I can meet traffic and neither of us has to pull over to the side, those following can also pass if they want.
I get highly irritated at those pulling 10ft+ wide machines down the highway that never look back or pull over on occasion to let traffic by.
Got behind one like that a few weeks ago, they pulled over for oncoming traffic but not once did them pull over to let the 1/4 mile plus backup behind them go by in the 4 miles we followed them.

I'm sorry my reading comprehension didn't absorb your 1st sentence. IMHO as one ages their reading comprehension begins to lag behind. I know mine has gotten worse as I get older.
