4440 John Deere hydraulic couplers

I bought a 1982 John Deere 4440 a few years ago and am having great difficultly with the hydraulic couplers. I bought the conversion kits to change them from JD to pioneer. The problem is that the seals last about 2 weeks and then they begin to leak out of the small shaft sticking out the bottom. I have replaced them multiple time with the same results. Even had a JD mechanic do it one time with no better results  Any suggestions???

Some times when the stem is installed it wants to go in at an angle, then you tend to tap it on through,, this can score the seal area and pretty much screws that barrel....when you start to put the stem in you must be sure to hold it up straight "then" tap it through..this could be your problem..If you want I can check them out here for you and of course only replace what is needed,,then bench test them under operating pressure..

You may have bent the little shafts, NOT hard to do if anyone has ever got rough with 'em trying to pop open a tip that's under pressure.

There's not much "meat" in the flat "paddle" area that flips the coupler balls open, and in my experience the new changeover shafts aren't as "hard" as the originals, and can be relatively easily bent.

If a person has the time, it's not a bad idea to put the SCV levers in "float" to relieve pressure BEFORE uncoupling, makes hooking back up a LOT easier on things.

Probably not such bad idea for other reasons as well, vs. letting an implement sit in the "up" position without engaging the cylinder stops.

Thanks for the suggestions, So if I scored the seal area the than what you are saying the whole housing is toast and have to buy a new one, or can it be honed out smooth. As far as releasing the pressure before disconnecting the hoses, I usually do that.

On the second thot I realize that the part that might be score is the inner guts of the coupler and is the part that I bought when I changed to the JD coupler, or am I mixed up? Does anyone know if there multiple company that make these conversation kits?
