John Deere 50

Started to replace the water pump on my 53 John Deere 50 tractor and noticed the bottom tank has a rod in the front that looks like it moves in and out like a plunger anyone know what it's for? Never seen one before Thanks Howard

On the early ones that was to run the shutters for the radiator. Most are unhooked and/or shutters removed.

Mike is correct, there was a linkage & pivot rod that attached to the in radiator thermostat that operated the shutters. Very few worked for
long. I remember my father saying, if you need to have it work, better oil the shutters everyday...

As below, it is operated by a sylphon (thermostat) to open the shutters. I was lucky and got a NOS unit and a set of operational shutters for my 60. Spent a lot of time cleaning up the shutters, but by golly they work !

Howard, I'm guessing your shutters have been removed?

I flipped my shutters upside down and hooked a cable to them so I could manually control them from the operator's position. My 50 runs better when I get the water temperature up around 180 degrees.
