OT what would cause motorcycle to keep burning up coils

A year ago I bought a 76 Honda 250xl. Rand great but always had a stumble mid range. Then after a few months the could went out. I replaced it and it ran good again. During the troubleshooting I noticed that the plug wire had high resistance 10k ohms. I didn’t replace it but then a few months later, the second coil died. Then I replaced coil condenser plug and wire. This removed the stumble and it ran great better than ever.

Now it won’t start again... when it ran goodnin the past it ALWAYS started on the first kick... until the coil would go out and then once replaced start on the first kick again. Since it’s happened twice I’m dead sure it’s the coil again

What would cause a 6v points motorcycle to eat coils?[/img]

Does any one make a solid state kit for that model?? As for what is frying your current coils. I would say heat/vibration. That kills the majority of coils.

Bad voltage control from the alternator Check it when running for more than 7 volts, and possibly AC at the battery. Jim

The charging system on many of the older bikes did not regulate battery voltage well so if it is charging to high it can cause a problem like your having or the rectifiers could also be bad so seeing high voltage and AC voltage which will cause all sorts of odd problems

Guessing bad/shorted rectifiers, bad ground, and sulfated battery will all contribute to high voltage.

250 XL would be a single cylinder, dirt bike if I remember correctly. Does it even have a battery?

Enter Ford-Chevy 6 cylinder engines: Bracket on the side of the block. Never figured that did the coils any good. Maybe they figured rather than conduction heating from the block they would get convection cooling from the radiator fan.....blowing hot air on them. Over the years I have had coils as the culprit when an engine runs for half an hour or so and then suddenly quits.

It does have a battery that is about 6 months old, fully charged.
