We put on 25 lbs/ac of a grass alfalfa mix this spring with a Brillion seeder. Broad caste 150 lbs/ac 17-17-17 and sprayed it for weeds early June. It seemed to take forever to come up and never really grew very tall. Cut it Saturday and you talk about thick! Got 189 5' bales of dry hay off 40 acres today. Well use it for calves and far off dry cows. First time in many years we direct seeded hay.

Wow! Nice first cutting. Around here in NWIA back in the late 80’s or early 90’s a few farmers tried direct seeding alfalfa in the spring by mixing the alfalfa seed in a sprayer tank with Treflan and spraying it on the ground. I assume they used big nozzles with no screens. The practice didn’t last long so it must not have turned out well. The one field I saw seeded that way looked OK from the road but that can be deceiving.

We had it done several times with 10/34/0 fertilizer and it worked real well . The fertilizer held
it in suspension . But when they tried with Treflan and water it was spotty as it didn't stay
suspended . That was before the dry floaters came around here .
