Need help-tractor quit out in the field

Was mowing today with the Massey 165 gasser. Sputtered and quit after about 2 hours. I opened the gas cap and released big vacuum. Got it restarted but sounded like it was running on one cylinder, ran for about 30 seconds, then it quit. Tried again 30 minutes later and it started and ran fine for 30 seconds, then it quit. Battery went dead and I had to stop trying.

I had to jump it last time I used it about a month ago, and had to jump it today. It had about 1/4 tank and I added 5 gallons before starting. It smokes a lot, white smoke. I took the battery out and will get a new one, and get a new in line fuel filter. It is about an hour away from home. Any other suggestions?

Since there is a known fuel problem, I would start by checking the rest of the fuel system. A new filter is not going to unplug any that are currently plugged. I don't know about a Massey 165 but most tractors have at least two, often three.

Sounds like water in the gas start at the tank and drain some gas making sure you have a good flow and no water then drain the lines, filters, carb.Make sure gas flows thru the carb as it should out of the drain hole.I always like to put in some type of quick drain in the drain hole of a carb and give it a quick drain often. If the filter has had water get to it many filters will swell and not let gas thru so a new filter is needed.

I think the word vacuum is the key here. if your gas cap isn't vented it will stop the flow of fuel to your carb. when you shut it off for a spell the carb fills back up so it will run until the vacuum overcomes the carb. good luck

I have a 65 gas, not sure how similar they are , But when I have this problem I first drain the sediment bowl. Fixes the problem about 80% of
the time. Low battery is probably from sitting so get a $20 solar charger. Does this tractor have a generator? if so it may not be charging the
battery when it?s running. My 65 has a generator and I charge the battery about twice a month. Get a vented gas cap .
I would start with those three items and go from there. I do not have any in-line filter On my tractor except the sediment bowl, You will not be
able to see anything in the bowl just drain it and try again.

Somewhere in the sequence of events, you might want to drain the carb and check the fuel flow. Not always pleasant to do but necessary.

I have a 165 gas also. i have problems with fuel flow at sediment bowel. any water makes a gunk that stops mine up at
the inlet.i have back-blowed it to clear in field, drain & clean when time permits

Taking the cap off an having it do that says tank vent is clogged but maybe only a small part of your problem.
By the way you should always trouble shoot the moment you have a problem like that.
#1 check that you have a good blue/white spark at the center wire and at all the plugs wires that jump a 1/4 inch gap or more.
#2 pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas that will fill a pint jar in less then 3 minutes and I in this case bet you will not and f you put that in line filter back on you will still not have it. In line filters are not made for gravity flow system on a tractor. Most in line filters are made to a system with a fuel pump and most tractors are gravity flow. Filters made for gravity flow systems most of them use a small hose/pipe which restrict the flow enough to cause problems
