lost billfold while brushhogging

Great weather so borrowed my buddy's Long 260 tractor with 5 ft. 'hog to do my yard. Lots of twisting & squirming in the seat as I backed into tight places. Returned tractor & did chores around the place, then went to the store, grabbed for my wallet, GONE! Oh no. Hadn't used it since the night before so didn't really know whether I'd mislaid it or lost it off the tractor. No easy find so that meant walking & looking for bits of plastic, paper & leather. Nothing I could see so had hopes of finding it intact. Took a 4 prong pitchfork & started turning over hay. Neighbors prolly thought I'd gone over the edge & off my trolley. After turning clumps of weeds & grass there it lay - intact! Fantastic as I was ready to leave on a 600 mile trip & had to have it. Next time it goes into the cargo pants low pocket or stays in the car. 'Course I said that the last time I pulled this trick 25 years ago. Didn't mind much losing it on the dozer as it was always under the seat. Tractors need to come with catch pans.

I hate Blue Jeans, normally wear a sport style sweatpants. I normally make sure I wear ones with zippers on the pockets when doing things in which the wallet or keys could disappear. Learned the hard way like You just did; but with an expensive pocket knife. It is still laying out there in a 60 acre field after 30 years that I was disking that day. Had it at 8 a.m. when I sat down the IH 666, & wasn't there at 10 p.m. when I went to use it to turn the key off (key was broke off) on the ignition. I had used a screwdriver earlier in the day. DAD... Who bought me the knife made sure for several years after... I had nothing in my pocket on a tractor!

Same here. Then when I make a quick run from the shop, or field, to get parts, I wonder when I'll get stopped by the law, without my license. And there's usually a gun in the truck. That's probably enough to get me hauled off, here in NY state!

When I do carry my wallet, it's right over my heart. I always wear a shirt with pockets.

Whatever I wear it is in my hip pocket. If not, it seems like I can't go five minutes without checking for it.

That is why I carry a nylon wallet. Have done so for nearly 40 years and they won?t squirt out like leather ones do. I always carry mine.

Never carry a wallet when I'm on the farm working no reason to leave it in the truck or house.I don't carry cash in the wallet anyway carry that in my front pocket.Carrying a wallet in the back pocket will cause backache sometimes too.

Well, your story ended well which is the important thing. I was told that there are electronic scanners that can pick up your credit card info, especially if your wallet is in your back pocket. The link below explains it (sort of) and there are scanners but they have limitations apparently and it sounds like we're pretty safe (I think). Someone is selling special shielding wallets though just the same.

yep, had the dozers steal mine all the time till I went to a tri-fold, little uncomfortable but stays put

a few years ago with a new wallet in my back pocket I got sciatic pain. since then I carry wallet in front pocket of pants/jeans. works for back pain and supposedly a "pick pocket" will never go into your front pocket. fwiw

eye glasses in a shirt pocket escape too. so far I've been lucky and either caught them or found them.

I have never lost a wallet around the farm. I try to remember to leave it in the house or truck but sometimes forget. I have lost my pipe out of a shirt or jacket pocket on rough ground.

I lost mine once, about two hours on a MF TO. Walked the entire mowed area not there. Next day went to climb onto the tractor, and there was the wallet, lying on the top of that square axle housing. What are those odds?

Years ago, when my two sons were teenagers, they were picking up hay while I was finishing up with the baler. My oldest son had raked for me before I got home from work, and I looked back at the luckiest time and saw his billfold flipping along in front of the pickup.

I've squirmed my wallet out of my pocket twice, and walked the mowed field and found it both times. I'm a slow learner, I guess. My wallet stays in the dresser drawer almost constantly now. What do I need a wallet for in the middle of a hay field?

A billfold and tractor should never even come close to each other in any way shape or form. I NEVER have my billfold on me when I am on a tractor even if I am miles from home

Lol, had a girl in Rome, Italy on a train try to pick pocket me, she put her hand in my back pocket, I just turned and smiled... I had already started carrying mine in my front pocket by then.
I thought it was pretty funny, she did not look amused..

That’s a heck of a feeling. Finding it again is a heck of a feeling too! Glad you found it. The only good part about losing it in a field is you can be pretty sure the wrong person won’t find it. Last time I lost mine from a tractor and couldn’t find it I had to get a new draft card. Found it the next year though but it wasn’t much good by then. Since than I have been lucky and found it under the seat. One time I found it in the door pocket of the pickup. I have yet to figure out how that happened.

I used to carry my cash in my shirt pocket too, til it started on fire while welding and burned my money, chest and face. Lol. Was the last time I did that.

Bush hogged mine once. Made a round saw some trash. Hadnt seen any in field thought it was strange. Black piece of cloth. Said to myself hey my wallet is black. Ate everything up. Never did get another social security card.

When we were expecting our firstborn, I acquired a "beeper", a pager to allow my wife to summon me from the farm if labor started. I lost it off my hip while field cultivating a field prior to planting. We tried calling it for hours, never could hear it. Weather kept us from planting right away, and Dad ran across the field with a spring harrow to break it up before seeding- he worked the pager to the surface, spotted it, and gave it back to me. Never ended up needing it.

I took a picture of my driver's license on my phone, just in case I happen to be stopped while driving without my wallet. I most likely will have my phone somewhere with me, and MIGHT get away showing that to the officer- no guarantee- but better than just remembering the number (which I do, anyway)

I never carry my wallet when I am working in the fields and around the farm. Lost too many other things out of my pockets over time. Only when I have to drive a long way on the road I take it with me in the tractor in case someone should ask to see my drivers licence.
My dad lost his wallet once in the woods. He had been working there all afternoon and had no idea where to find it. He had a guy from town come with his dog and the dog found it right away.

Yah, I thought that might confuse you a bit Alinark. As long as it's well and good though I'm happy, I just wish you could be.

I carry a metal money clip in my front pocket and luckily have never lost it. My grandpa always carried a trifold. He would get two wide rubber bands probably about a half inch wide and wrap around his wallet to keep it from pushing out while riding a farmall m. I tried once when I was younger. It sticks it in your pocket pretty good. I just never could sit on a wallet very long without tremendous back pain

When we were selling produce I needed to carry my flip phone on me in case my wife called with a customer request while I was out picking...lost it quite a few times and was lucky enough to find it every time. Once it took two days and went thru an irrigation cycle...battery was almost dead by the time we found it from all the calls we were making to it. It pays to have a good memory of where you were that day. When brush hogging it stays in the truck, keys in my pocket, smart phone fits snug in my shirt pocket.

Most billfolds are lost because they are too fat to stay in a pocket. How many times have you seen guys pull one out that is two inches thick? It is like so many other things, just procrastination, it doesn't get cleaned out. If you were to go through yours you would probably leave half the stuff out of it.

I try to leave everything in the truck before hopping on the tractor. As my fields get bigger I have less and less interest in looking for keys and wallets in them. Of course... if you have a tractor with a cab there is a little less to worry about.

Just a quick correction for you Alinark ...... that should read "you're" (as in you are) as opposed to "your". Anyone who dedicates themselves to searching for off-topic posts and replies must have a lot of time on their hands, it would be a full time job. But, I guess that's the purpose of the YT police. Anyways, as Roburto Duran said once after a fight, "No Mas."
