Dang breakdowns!

It has been the year of the alternator for some reason. I?m to the point of having some rebuilt just because they are getting old and all of the
others are quitting on me this year anyway. Then today my chore truck pooped out. I use it everyday to run to pastures and go between farms -
she left me walking home for the first time ever. Unfortunately, I think the Bakelite cam gear broke on me. I have no cam rotation (valves,
distributor, or fuel pump) and the crank is intact all the way through. I guess after 83 years it just gave up. Things just don?t last like they used
to.

One company had a stash of the NOS gears. Tomorrow I need to call them and see if they still do. I?ll probably just go ahead and order one and
the cover seals before I tear into it. Even if I don?t need everything I order I?ll be glad I have them at some point. That?s kind of the pitfall of using
something from 1935 everyday, I guess. No point in letting it sit and rot, though.

Kinda neat to think that, back in the day, the parts man would take your order over a wall-mounted telephone that was probably crank-operated to make calls. Your receipt was hand-written in legible writing because penmanship was still taught. Everything took a long time because that's how it was. I like to romanticize those times but not sure how many of us in the internet age could stand it if we had to go back.

If you ever run into not being able to get a bakelite part, 3d print it at a very high density and it works just as well. I printed one for a hit and miss engine to drive the mag. After my friend laughed at mine and had some "custom made" out of teflon, which quickly failed, he tried mine and ah shucks, its still running many hours after the others gave up the ghost.

just a hint, have done several chev timing gears on 207 thru 261, you probably have 2 or 3 bent push rods. easy check is to turn them when they are in position for valve clearance, bend will be obvious.

Six months ago I had my daily runner in for something else. It had 125,000 on it so I had the guy replace the alternator too. It is in a tough place down underneath, so I didn't want to get caught on the road with it going out.

That is a good idea. We have a 3d printer at work but they are getting cheap enough I was thinking of getting one for the house. I have made some bushings just to try it and they have held up so far. The real cool thing about the 3d printing is parts the would take many steps to machine and set up tooling for print out just as easy as a bushing or other simple parts.

I pulled the pan on this one a couple of years back and cleaned it out. If that isn?t a jungle gym of tubing and dip trays! I?ve never seen such a nest just to get some oil pressure and splash oiling from the vane pump. It still works so I guess I can?t knock it.

I bet sweetfeet would love to borrow that truck but she may not return it lol that would be fun to drive around in

Aw, heck, I think you should give her up, and by the way, send me the address, I will come get her out of you way, What an awesome old truck!

I take it the crank is turning with the starter... I did get bit one time the cam gear issue was a pattern problem I jumped the gun to find every thing OK with the timing gears :(... Ring gear was slipping on the flywheel...

notjustair after 83 years I think the old girl doesn't owe you any money  get her fixed and keep on trucking! ps. if you don't want to fix it give me a call and i'll come and get her.

You will probably find a good bit of the gear teeth chewed off.

My fear is a piece of a tooth will find it's way into the oil pump and lock it up.

Not having an oil filter is going to let the finer stuff get too bearings too.

Last time I was in there I fixed the screen on the pump - it had come off and blocked oil flow and lowered the pressure. I think everything is going to have to get a thorough flush to avoid collateral damage with that gear shrapnel. My uncle had the engine rebuilt in the late 60?s when he got it from grandpa - it still doesn?t use any oil and looks like new inside. I?m going to avoid a rebuild and just do the cam gear and clean her up. I?ve only been without two days and I already feel like I lost my best friend!
