when my mf-35 is running what voltage reading should I get between the 2 posts on my ammeter or between either post to ground? thanks Michael

Between the posts should be millivolts (less than 100 probably) This is because that voltage drop is the measure of the amps flowing through the ammeter's internal shunt.
from either post to ground should be battery voltage. Jim

If the amp gauge is good you will read nothing between the 2 posts. When it is running and you check voltage from either post to ground you should read 13-14 volts and not running you should read around 12.5 plus volts for a full charged battery. If lower then 12.5 then the battery is not at full charge

Jan ...... assuming it is 12V negative ground, are you saying that a metered voltage reading from the negative battery post to ground will give a 12V reading? That confuses me for some reason.

I believe what he is saying if you measure voltage from either post on the amp gauge you will read battery voltage

See my post above:

An "ideal" (don't exist lol) ammeter would be zero ohms a short circuit so on either terminal there should be near the same as battery voltage with respect to ground. A full charged lead acid 12 volt battery stabilized at rest would read 12.6 volts subject to temperature but if coupled to a good working charging system at fast RPM it should raise to at least 13 up to 14+ volts subject to temperature, RPM, battery condition and voltage regulation circuitry.

THEREFORE voltage post to post would be extreme low volts subject to ammeters internal resistance but either post to ground would be as above.
