Massey 165 pto side plate stuck

I have a Massey 165. Posted a few weeks ago about the pto not staying engaged- handle falling with gravity because the detent ball is in the wrong spot

Finally have had a minute to attempt to tackle this.

I cannot get the side plate cover off

Removed all of the bolts, disconnected hydraulic lines but it appears to be held on by something internal-

What is holding it? I assume it can?t just be friction from the pto engagement rod.

Do I have to remove the lift cover to access something?

OUTSIDE hydraulic lines? Then there's INSIDE line and elbow too for the auxiliary hydraulic valve supply. Lift cover NEEDS to come off for tractors so equipped..

DON'T just remove the bolts and lift it off, there's a roller that needs removed from the pump FIRST. Best get a service manual so no linkage gets wrecked..

If it's like the older Masseys there is another round cover on the opposite side.

If there is, take it off, look through see what needs to come off.

Lol. We have a wooden shim (like you would use installing a window) laying parallel with the levers travel. When you engage it tightens and holds it in place.

When I thought it was an easy fix, I was going to fix it right. Now that it appears a little more involved, it may wait until 1st cut is done and we wait for 2nd.

May actually get a gap this year between 1st and 2nd with all of our dry weather.

Last 5 years have cut our last 1st and 1st 2nd on the same day.

I noticed that if I got the shaft/stub that the pto handle pinned to, stuck out another 1/4? then it stayed engaged, the internal spring would work. Problem was getting it to stay out to get handle on. Which isnt going to happen until the lift cover is off. That isn?t going to happen until after first cut is done or early fall.
So I came up with a temp solution- cut a washer in half pried the handle out and slipped washer behind it. Now shatter engages/disengaged properly.
