OT Electrical Meter Box

Anyway to tell if my meter box has dual service lugs to run power to my barn without having the power company come pull the meter? It is just a standard Milbank service meter box form what I can tell.

Thank you in advance.
Thad

Thank you for the quick replies. I will have to call the power company then to schedule an appointment. I was expecting to have to replace it, but hoping for reuse.

I own the meter box and conduit, power company owns the supply feed and meter. They will happily sell me a protection plan for my pieces though.

Thanks again,
Thad

A 320 amp meter base has an extra set of
lugs. 200 amp bases that I have seen dont
have additional lugs.

My meter box has a capacity of 4, 230 volt breakers. I am currently using 3 of them. One to the house, one to the shop, and one to the well.

When I ran electric from the meter box to my sons garage last year, I just pulled the meter myself and had the electric company come
and reseal the box when we were done.

When changing the meter base . This is the time to upgrade the meter base to a unit with a built in generator transfer switch for the lowest price and the most satisfaction .
Raises the value of the property too.

Our local electrical code enforcer is requiring local disconnect at the meter for new construction(not for replacements that I know of). A coworker found that out the hard way after he installed his new weather head and meter box without a disconnect.
You may be well served to ask your inspector what he will be looking for, so you can get it right the first time. I agree, a generator connection is a good idea, even if you don't use it now.

(quoted from post at 14:35:24 07/18/18) with our elec company you own the box they own the meter and the lines running to it.

That is how mine works as well. And if a storm destroys the box it is up to me to buy another and pay to have an electrician install it, then the utility will come and plug the meter into it and run the drop to the lines I own up through the mast.
