Folks, the N & W Class J 4-8-4s represent the zenith of steam locomotive design. Built in 1950, steam locomotives did not get any more modern than this.

Enjoy.

Awesome

I might argue a little with most modern loco. Boone and Seenic Valley Rail Road purchased a new steam loco. Several years ago. Location-- Boone Iowa. Check them out.

There were several Chinese locos imported and yes they are brand new. Post a photo of it. Number 142 is one of the new ones brought in. 5hey Americanize them when they get over here.
Chinese steam.

Yes, I'm aware of that but I don't believe it is any more modern or even as modern as the Class J's.

any good story worth listening to is worth listening to again and I assume a video is worth a second look. My wife tells me that I tell the same story over and over. Last October I spent 25 days in a nursing home to recover from an injury. I told an old man over 100 years old a true funny story and he told it back to me five times.

Great Video, thanks for posting Dean. The Class J 611 was declared a National Mechanical Engineering Landmark some years ago. It had the most advanced steam propulsion system in a locomotive at that time. It is great to see her fired up again. I visited the 611 when ir was inactive and on display at the VA tansportation museum.

Indeed.

She's being worked right at the very limit of adhesion.

Such heavy trains would have been double-headed in the day.

One wonders how many E units would have been assigned to this train in the 1950s....

Here's another link to the 611 pulling a similar train uphill.

The Class Js, were relatively quite locomotives, but this video has some great stack talk.
