got the m5 ready for haying

got the m5 ready for haying, not finished all the paint and body work yet, (that will be next winters project). still have to bring in the ih-100 sickle mower for the new knife bar assembly and new ujoints on the drive shaft. spend a day getting it all back together and tuned up. AND then have a serious talk with the weather guros about a 4 or 5 day window to get it cut, raked and baled :lol:

Looks good cm is your mower a mounted or pull type mower ?
I put a new sickle in my number 8 and I think 🤔 I found out
why they were so cheap !! Turns out the sections and the
rivets are made of chrome plated biubble gum !! Arlen sent
me some John Deere sections and I?ve been replacing the
(new) sections with them although all I?ve got is cheap rivets
to put them on with . Local cnh fiat doesn?t stock rivets and in
order to change to bolts I?ve got to change all my hold downs

thanks s.v., the ih-100 is a pull or trailer type sickle mower. it came with bolted sections and hold downs, so picked out the best bar of the 3 I got with it, put on all new sections (case/ih) new knife head and pin, had to replace 2 u joints on the pto shaft, will start tomorrow getting it all back tighter and tuned up. here's a pic of the ih-100

Your M5 is a bareback (no three point)?? I have over a dozen MMs around here and other than the UBs my only bareback is a Big Mo 400 M. 2 M5s 2 M604s and a M670 all with lift arms.

over a dozen MM's? (your not a hoarder shinnery?) :lol: I should come down and pic up one of the M604's or the 670 with the lift arms :wink:

according to a lot of members here I have talked to and oldtimers here the ih-100 and 1300 where some of the best sickle mowers built. I am looking forward to see how it do's compared to my old case t-10 sickle mower. (pitman arm vs. belt drive balance head)

that was nov. 2017 the day I got it home from kindersly sask., but come our first big snowfall this coming winter i'll be sure and some you some :lol:
 
Pitman mowers were OK in a way but the belt driven ones for the most part are just way more advanced in cutting ability.More strokes per minute,smoother operating,pitman sticks and hardware were always an issue.With a belt mower it can cut more hay faster with less maintenance has been my experience.I've run several of the belt mowers but like my NH 456 trailer mower the best it'll mow all
day pulled by my 31 HP Yanmar 330 (same tractor as a JD 950) running 4 1/2 MPH burning less than a half gallon fuel an hour.Run 5th gear could run 6th and cut a little faster but in 5th
I'm not straining either the tractor,mower or ME(LOL)That's my favorite part of hay making is cutting hay with that rig.Have a 2nd NH 456 I usually pull with my AC D15 does a good job
but burns more fuel(gas) than the Yanmar.Also have a 3pt JD 350 belt driven mower does a good job been looking for a JD 450 trailer type but no luck so far.

the big difference I have seen sv. is the ih-100 runs much smoother and quieter than my case t-10. when I got to bill's farm in sask. he had it hooked to a Kubota tractor and we ran it and it had a lot less vibration. I think the other thing is having that wooden pitman arm folks are worried about breaking them. I have 3 spare pitman arms cut and drilled ready to go so if I break one it's not a big job to change out.
