what spray to use??

I've got a hay field that is getting a lot of Dogbane in it that I want to get rid of. Problem is, there is a good stand of red clover and orchard grass that I don't want to kill. I was thinking about using 2 4 D but it is a broadleaf killer if I'm not mistaken and has a good chance of eliminating the clover too. So what would get rid of the dogbane and leave the rest alone. I know some of you folks have had this problem too. Keith

Keith,

I wouldn't know a Dogbane if it bit me. I do know, however, that I spray 2,4-D on my hay fields at least once each year. I have a lot of red clover mixed with Fescue grass. The 2,4-D causes the clover to wilt somewhat, but it is back to normal within a couple of weeks and I bale it along with the Fescue.

I suppose that s strong concentration of 2,4-D might have a greater effect on the clover, but I mix mine to the medium concentration as specified on the bottle.

Good luck ridding your field of Dogbane, whatever in the world it is.

This is a bad time of the year for 24D, the plants do not absorb it well, and most of it will vaporize off and drift, the maximum application temperature is about 75 degrees.

2,4-DB
trade names butyrac, butoxone, probably others
like 2,4-D except legumes are tolerant.
like has been mentioned, best in fall when it is absorbed and translocated to roots better.

Dogbane looks a lot like milkweed except it has a red colored stem and has berry like seeds instead of the pod like milkweed has. Yes I've heard that it is supposed to be poisons to livestock but several people have told me that it's not, so I don't know, but there are several farmers that have baled it in the past (me being one) with no ill effects to either horses or cattle. By the time it is baled there isn't anything much but the darned stems which they won't eat.. I know it has begun to get pretty prevalent in this area where we haven't had it before and it spreads all over the field pretty quickly. I just don't like the stuff in my hay.

Interesting. I have the same problem and left/cut around a thicket of dogbane yesterday, plan to spray it tomorrow after the hay is baled. I will use Grazon Next HL. I have about given up on clover in my hay, the weeds get so bad that they negate the advantages of the clover. I have baled a little bit of dogbane in my hay for years without any poison problems but it is spreading and I plan to knock it out with multiple spraying as needed.

Yes, there are about 3 different formulations of 24D now, each a little different and affect legumes -very- differently. Be sure you get the right one.

24D should kill the clover, but have to get it in the spring or fall, doubt it will work this time of year.

yeah dave I agree 2-4 d should get the clover I spray in the spring once emergence has started but year after year I still small leaf clover I've been using 6oz per gal which from what I have read is about twice what I need . any advise is welcome

I had some starting to spread in one field and a lot in another field I let a neighbor take. I used to walk around with a hand sprayer and glyphosphate to hit the small spots but it was spreading. The neighbor was raising lambs then and his ewes were aborting. The horses just left it. He was having the field sprayed (I think it was 2-4-D but not sure) so I had mine done at the same time. Knocked the dogbane right out but took the trefoil out too. What we had here is hemp-dogbane, cross of dogbane and Indian hemp.
