Tire wear

For the brain trust,if the front tires on a truckcar are toeing out which side of the tire will wear in or out,and on the reverse if toeing in which will wear. I know caster and camber comes into play but I was just talking toe in or out. Thanks for any and all info. Neil

toe out will cause inside of each tire to wear, toe in, the outside.

Caster and camber will usually affect one wheel only, where toe in affects both equally.

Caster has no effect on tire wear. Caster will only affect steering characteristics. Camber will cause uneven wear to either the inside or outside of the tire depending on whether it is too positive or too negative. Toe in will cause the outside edges to wear more rapidly, but will also cause scalloping type of wear. Toe out will do the same type of wear, except to the inner edges.

Scalloping is usually a balance or a shock problem. Tire is bouncing.

Jim is correct, caster does not contribute to tire wear, uneven caster will cause it to pull in one direction.

My work truck the front tires were 1 1/2 farther apart in the front than the back side of the tires. They wore badly on the inside edge of the tires. I did a DIY alignment on the front and tires are so screwed up one of the tires cause the truck to pull to the right. I had the spare on it for a couple days and it drove great. I'm hoping the problem will correct itself.

Toe is 99% of tire wear,camber has little affect on wear on radial tires,more on Bias tires. Yes, toe out will wear on the inside of the tires.

On my SEMI, All alignment is correct, I find that tires wear unevenly, When driving, most drivers turn left at a faster speed, than when turning right. this causes more wear on the outside of the left tire. To ensure even tread wear for the life of the tire, I measure the tread depth, at each groove across the tire, and record the numbers Do the same for the other steering tire. Then I dismount both tires, and remount them with the most tread, where the most wear was before. Modern tubeless tires are easy to change, without removing the rim. And when the tires are worn out, they are worn evenly.
