Putting nitrogen on Corn that is tasseled!!! Video

There are machines that can apply nitrogen to tall corn. So you can apply smaller amounts spread out over the growth cycle of the corn plant. You can also go in an correct places that are nitrogen deficient.

This video is from a young fellow over in South-Western WI. HE does some very good farming videos. So if your not familiar with grain farming you may find his stuff interesting.

My neighbor has been applying urea to chest high corn this week. Local Co-op has the rig, and this is the first time I have seen anyone applying fertilizer to corn this tall. My neighbor is always trying leading edge ideas, and grows excellent crops. This year they are putting up a grain /drying storage system so they can take advantage of the non GMO , conventional corn, soy market. Right now, no local elevators are set up to keep non GMO crops separate. Non GMO currently brings a $50.00 per tone premium

I use urea twice once when corn is a foot or so tall then just as the tassle is starting to show. Crops are always bountiful.

We had that done to our corn yesterday in central Iowa. Big shot of N and some sulfur and micronutrients in the mix, too.
Only my 2nd year making the calls at our farm but has worked well for us.

I think we will see more y drop application in the future for several reasons. The biggest reason is to try to keep nitrogen from leaching into the water table by applying smaller amounts in split applications as the corn needs it. My farm has received way too much rain and the corn in lower laying land that isn’t drowned out is pale and yellow from excessive soil moisture and nitrogen loss from leaching. A few days ago I had 10 gallons per acre of 32% nitrogen y dropped on all but 60 acres of the corn to give it a boost. The cost of application is $11 per acre alone on top of the cost of the nitrogen but it should return two to three times that amount in better yield.

When I look back at the way dad farmed when I was a kid and the way we farm now there is no comparison. What will we see in the future. Sorry I got a little ‘long winded’ with my reply.

Appling urea without working it into the ground is a waste of money. Too much evaporation.

There is a little bit of a timing issue with Y dropping. If rain doesn’t come within a couple of days or if the soil is bone dry the nitrogen will start going up in the air. Last year I probably lost some y dropped N because it forgot to rain after application. However, the soil was plenty damp so some N was drawn into the soil by the moisture. How much is the big unknown. This year half of the y dropped acres got a little over an inch of rain right away, the applicator was rained out in fact. The rest was put on very wet soil so I’m confident a very high percentage of the N went into the soil. Nothing in farming is for sure. Sometimes we have to take chances, that’s what farming is all about.

Whoa! Does that work out to almost an extra $1 US per bushel for non-GMO corn?

2200 pounds per metric Tonne/56 pounds per bushel = 39.24 bushels per tonne

$50C x.76$C/$US = $38US

$38US/39.24 bushels = $0.97 per bushel

Its interesting that the Ydrops are just now being used. 20 years ago I was doing that to a certain extent with just drop nozzles, right before flood irrigation season. We were applying nitrogen and sulpher through the pivot back in the mid 70s for follier feedings. Not knocking things, just find it funny that its now a 'fad'or maybe proven practice that is just now catching on.

As to the organics, I have been staying busy with the truck hauling organics from 1 part of the country to the other. Lots of organic wheat going north, and organic corn going south east.
