Good morning everyone. My father has an 820 (1968-1973 version) and I read somewhere that it was almost identical to the 1020.

I have a few questions:

What are the major differences between the Manheim 820 and the John Deere 1020?

Also, would it only be able to pull a 2 bottom plow (sand/clay)?

JD 820 with 3 cyl engine has open center hyd's, JD 1020 built for N American sales with 3 cyl engine has closed center hyd's. This same 1020 before SN 045200 would have open-center hyd power steering with PS pump mounted on RH frt of engine. Either tractor should pull a 2 bottom 3 pt hitch moldboard in most soils.

I have a 1967 1020 gas and we run a JD 415 2 bottom plow in loam soils with rocks without an issue.

This is a video of ours plowing this spring.

Some of the 820 were seven speed tractors. Those only had one reverse which was third. Most 820's did not have power steering. Dad pulled a 3 bottom 14 plow with his one spring but the fuel was really turned up. That same fall it was used to chop corn silage with a one row chopper because the new 2520 he bought had engine problems for the second time that year. Found out it was in a flood and completly underwater before be bought it. Deere did make it right by giving him a brand new engine and the dealer got into some serious trouble for selling it like he did. I have a friend with two 820's and likes them for light chores. Tom

2-12 or 2-14 plow would be a better match than 3-12. You would get more done with less tire slippage. An 820 is around 30 or 32 HP and the 1020 around 38 HP?
