Genie boom lift

I have just aquired a 40 ft. Genie boom lift that is lp and will only start by giving it a whiff of starting fluid. After it is running it is fine. I dont know anything about lp. After I shut it off it will not start without giving it more starting fluid. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Mark.

We too have genie manlift, ours is a Z45/22 (articulated boom lift). It has the 2.3 ford gas that is propane or gasoline.

After it has set and got cold, we have to open the side door and hold the govenor linkage open to speed the motor up until it is warmed up a bit.

Then it starts and runs fine.

I am understanding that you have to give it a snort each time you start the motor?

Something is not right with the propane system.

Could be a vacuum leak between the throttle body and the regulator, or something wrong in the regulator.

If you can find a brand name on the regulator or any of the fuel components, that will help.

Here is a generic simplified diagram of how it works. The regulator has to recognize a pressure drop created by the engine vacuum in order to allow fuel to flow. This is obviously a very sensitive measurement, as there is very little vacuum while cranking. Some have an automatic primer circuit. Look things over closely, loose vacuum hoses, disconnected wire, etc.

Might be just a weak spark. Had a friend who got an Onan gen that was gasoline or natural gas for his house. Ran fine on gasoline but with gas it had a miss on one cylinder. Turned out to be a bad coil.

I have four Moline tractors on LP and they start better with the throttle wide open. May not be applicable to your machine, but I just mention it. Be ready to back the throttle once it starts.

Agree with Steve. We run 6 of the 2.3 fords in all terrain scissor lifts and ran into similar problems.. Is it gasoline also? If it?s dual run it on gasoline and see what it does.
