Battery recommendation for JD 720 Diesel

I am trying to get running an old john deere 720 diesel with a 24 volt electric starter. The tractor has the standard size battery box , and not the oversized box that normally came with these diesels. I would like a recommendation of a good 12 volt battery that I can buy two that are small in size so I can fit two in the box, but yet have sufficient power to turn over that diesel motor.

If it does NOT have any big honkin battery box to fit like four 6 volt batteries and you're using two twelves instead (which is fine) the bottom line answer is buy two matched of the biggest heaviest HIGHEST CCA RATED batteries you can physically fit in that compartment WELL DUH but I don't know the battery box size or exact battery dimensions to make a specific recommendation, sorry, maybe others can. Any chance to rig a bigger battery box ???? You can look at Lead Acid or AGM (like Optima) to find the max CCA (That's what you need) VERSUS physical size then make your decision based on that...........

Are you sure it's 24 volt start? Since it has a "standard size" battery box, maybe someone converted it to 12 volt start (which is recommended by several posters here) to "eliminate problems" that some electrically challenged folks have.

Indeed, all the 720 Diesels I owned (a bunch) were 6 volt and pony start and don't have a big battery box since they only needed a small 6 volt battery......Still if its 12 volt electric start now he still needs pretty decent CCA battery capacity....
