Pea harvest

Guys harvested the peas across the road from my house Friday night. Looks like the machine removed the peas from the pods based on how many empty pods there are. I remember in the 60's they took the whole vine
to the processing plant. As kids we went up and down the road picking them up and shelled the peas. A few years ago they cut the plants and just took the pods. Now they didn't even cut the plants. I guess
that's progress. I wish I could find a machine to shell peas at home.

Never used it so can't say how well it works. Look up Lehman's hardware for something called "Texas Pea Sheller" https://www.lehmans.com/product/texas-pea-sheller?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=NB_PLA_AllProducts_BING&zmam=32933335&zmas=1&zmac=20&zmap=16314&partner_id=bcnbing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=bing&utm_campaign=NB_PLA_AllProducts_BING&utm_term=&utm_content=0FD464qb_dm|pcrid|12200845298|pkw||pmt||

How was the crop? Big Delmonte pea and sweet corn processor west of me. Here the pea fields look terrible, worst I've ever seen. Just too much water. Most of the fields are ankle high and whitish. Then little ridges that are green. Very uneven ripening, what there is of peas.

My understanding is they barely got 1/2 their sweet corn acres planted timely. They typically quit planting here at the July 7th, but they are extending it a few more days to try to get some acres planted.

Hope other parts of the country are having good pea pack and sweet corn crops.

I didn't go into the field but it was organic peas so plenty of weeds and it has been brutal hot here for western NY so that's not good either. They had a watering system so the drought we are having didn't hurt them. There are places south of us a bit that do better with peas as they can get them in a month earlier than we can around here. Soil here doesn't dry out so fast as that south of us in the spring.

The neighbor I custom farm organic had me plant "field peas" on 40 acres. What a disaster. Like paul said, to wet. Planted late, to wet to timely rotary hoe, short and yellow, then weeds came through. When I told the crop adviser on the phone how bad the weeds were he said take the mower and mow off the patches. I said that won't work. I would be mowing the entire 40 acres.

Saw they harvested one of the few fields I drive by today. Wow. They only harvested maybe 20-25% of it. Few seams of taller green stripes on the hill tops where the peas didn't drown.

Hope there are other places with a better crop, that is kinda scary for the local economy if that is all they are getting. What few acres they did harvest did not look great either, from a road survey.
