She's Growing Up

Ever since my daughter could walk we put ear muffs on her and she has rode with me while I mow. At times she would fall asleep in my arms while I was mowing. LOL. She's now 6 (tall for her age) and we're getting to the point where she can't comfortably ride with me any more. I got a zero turn last year and when I pull the arms back there isn't enough room to rotate properly. Even on the bigger tractors it just isn't quite working any more. Kinda makes me sad.

Enjoy it while you can. It will seem like two weeks and she'll be starting to college.

True, but there's that sweet spot in between where [i:654c4848f0]she[/i:654c4848f0] mows while you sit on the porch and <s>nap</s> watch.

Do you realize how dangerous it is, what you"re doing, especially on a zero turn? At least add a safe buddy seat.

Guess I should have seen that coming.

The tips of the turning arms are literally about 1" apart and she's between my arms sitting on my lap. Where is she going to go? Do you have your kids go through life inside a blow up ball? You going to tell me I shouldn't let her ride in my 1965 Mustang too because it doesn't have airbags?

Amen my oldest daughter rode with me when she was young on lawnmower for many hrs. I'm glad YT police didn't see or know about it.
PS: she's 48 yrs old, lives behind me,helps me feed/work cattle & can operate a tractor as good or better than a lot of people. I drove a tractor by myself plowing when I was 11 yrs old & survived.

OK so you survived. A lot of kids didn't. Doesn't make you any better than the ones who died, just lucky. Sorry, gotta go with JMS on this one. I've never even thought about giving a kid a ride while I was mowing. Just too much to go wrong. You hear about it every year, some kid somehow falling off a riding mower and getting mowed. Yea I have given em rides on riding mowers but again, never, ever while mowing. And I'm from NJ and have also lived in TX, MN, KS and KY.

Maybe you won't feel quite the same way in twenty years when you see your future son-in-law mowing his lawn one of your grandchildren sleeping limp on his arm. EMT's hate emergency calls when kids are involved in those kind of preventable accidents. Our example is what teaches our kids how to raise our grandkids.

SC**W the YT safety police. I was an EMT for twenty years, a dad for 41 now and a grand dad too. In a few weeks your kids will be driving down the road moving out.

One thing for sure ........ no matter what side of the argument you might be with all of this, sit back in any situation and dream up
something that "might" happen by fluke or in a worse case scenario. Then realize that it could actually happen. Every accident in the book
can and does happen, and just because this guy or this guy's kid hasn't come close to experiencing the tragedy that might happen, the fact
remains that it COULD happen and HAS happened. Being smug about never having it happened to you or to someone you love (eg. references to
safety police etc) are typical responses. Bottom line, be careful out there and even then, no guarantees.

Accidents happen everyday. Some are avoidable, some are not. No one can fall off of a mower if they aren't on a mower.

Hang on, they might fall out of bed. LOL

OK they have to go to bed, every human has to sleep or they die. They do not need to ride a mower during mowing operations! It's that simple.

Really surprised I had to explain that to someone!

Sure, give em a ride with the deck shut off. Every kid who has been injured or killed while riding a mower with dad, grandpa or uncle ____ was needlessly endangered. Some of the operators have even done jail time for the incident! Bet you money in almost any state if someone called john law on you for doing this you can be arrested and charged with child endangerment and or abuse. So funny now?

Let me add a little here. Why do you think a lot of states, states with a lot of farms have passed laws about how old a kid has to be to operate equipment? It darn sure ain't cause none have been injured or killed!

Now the question is do you want to make it to where any kid, even the farm owners kids can't operate equipment until they are 18? Well that's coming! More than one farm state has had that idea proposed a heck of a lot more times than you can imagine! Only a matter of time till it becomes law.

Heck I was mowing lawns for money at 10. Now that's illegal in all states! Go research why!

My middle grandson loves to watch machinery work so when we go on the mower ride it's very difficult for me to leave the blades off cause I
know he'd like watching that grass shoot out the chute. However if grandma caught me doing that it would be an unhappy life for me. I'm like
you nrowles, I got a ztr with 1" clearance between the handles and him on my lap, where can he possibly go? If it was a conventional rider
mower, no way, wouldn't even consider it. I guess it's up to the individual to think about where his or her safe line is and stay within those
boundaries. Myself I was cutting grass with a push mower when I was 9 or 10 and a bunch of other stuff growing up that was normal everyday
life that parents wouldn't even consider nowadays. Where do you draw the line between letting them live life and keeping them in a bubble? DP
