sickle mower--double acting vs. single

I'm looking at getting a new sickle mower.

Will be used mostly for cutting grass hay. Mostly brome, but with bluegrass mixed in.

The bluegrass has, in my experience, been somewhat tough to cut.

What are the differences between a "double acting" (two sickles running opposite each other), and a "single" acting (one sickle running against stationary cutter guards)?

It seems to me that the double-acting one would cut tougher and finer grasses better. But you'd have to be careful of obstructions, etc., because there are no guards.

The single acting would be more protective of the sickle. But might plug easier in fine grass.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Saw a double acting cut thru a bale of hay. Mouse nest etc wouldn't stop it. Seems like it had some kind of guard and hold downs.

The double action are a high maintenance machine have seen way more that needed fixing than working. When it comes to 3pt sickle mowers I wouldn't buy new I'd be looking for a nice
John Deere 350 in good shape. They are simple, pretty rugged, cut good and easy to hook and unhook from the tractor.

I would be looking for a used proven one too. The NH 451 is very highly regarded. There is a lot of lower tier new stuff out there that has an expected life of ten years while there are also a lot of good old machines that easily go 50 years with only ten years use on them. Both your dollar and your maintenance hour can go much further with them.

Another vote for a NH 451
Bought mine used in 89, I've rebuilt the bar and pivot links once.
Still have it but mainly used for trimming nowadays.
Disc mowers do most of the hay cutting now.

I got a 451 NH sickle mower that I will sell probably hadnt cut 400 acres bought it from a friend and he had bought it brand new just setting asking a new price if you could get them but NH quit making them but parts are readily available, email is supposed to be open
