Farmall 656 diesel drive train issue

Got a farmall 656 diesel tractor project that I picked up cheap. Tractor runs drives great the only issue I have is when you pop the clutch fast from changing gears you can hear a sound such as gears binding or something being lose clunking. Don’t know much about international tractor more of a John Deere guy not to bash international fans I am the type that as long as it gets me from point a to point b. Any way had two people tell me that a bearing was bad. Jacked up both axles and soon tries freely and heard what appeared to be gears ingaging in the drive train on rear axle when spinning wheels both of them did it put tractor in gear and tires locked up as it would be in gear not much play in the gears just by rotating tires. Wanted to see what other people have had in the past also left brake doesnt engage all the great right brake engages good. Apologize for the long post but I don’t know much about these type of tractor don’t even know if you can get parts for the drive train anymore?

IH tractors have just about the best parts support out there. Most wear items like bearings, seals, gaskets, clutches, brake disks, etc. can be gotten from the local CaseIH dealer or aftermarket. Anything you can't find new, can be found used as the tractors are very common.

Can't really help you with the gear problem, but the brake problem can be fixed, with some combination of disassembly, cleaning, deglazing, adjustment, removal/addition of a shim, maybe replacing the brake disks...

I had a 656 in my shop a couple years ago that would move maybe 10 feet and then make a God afoul noise and stop moving. The ring gear In the dif. had all but 2 bolts broken that held it in place so it would move that 10 feet and stop moving because it would just flop out of the pinion gear and that ate up both gears

Thanks for the info tractor only makes the faint noise when chasing direction of movement as soon as you let clutch out it makes a binding noise not all the time just very frequently tractor runs and drive good.

Are the oil levels as they should be and also free of water?? Either one will cause that type of problem

Yes oil levels are up to where they should be changed hydraulic filter about 3 months ago found some metal shavings and one little chip of a gear tooth.

Metal shavings and part of a tooth means time to open it up and have a look see. I would also install magnet type drain plugs so as to catch and hold any shavings. On that 656 I replaced the ring and pinion I put in 2 or 3 magnet type drain plug since I knew I could never get all the shavings out.

I know what you mean
Bought tractor cheap was beat up got it running good and used it as a side backup tractor guy I bought it from never changed out the hydraulic filter so I went ahead and changed it about 3 months ago. That was the only real issue I saw gears shift good I try not to grind on gears my dad on the other hand like to grind until he finds the gear. When driving tractor transmission doesn’t sound like dozer taking off. Sounds pretty normal to my ears. Idk
I jacked both rear tires up and spon both by hand freely and they turned freely you could hear what sounds like gears Turing in the drive train when I put it in gear both tires locked as of it was in gear didn’t have much backlash or play very little.

Have you checked to make sure nothing is loose at the axle to wheel clamp,or the wheel to rim clamps. If those are not tight, when you change
direction, they can make a slight noisy slip until they contact the stop(wheel lug)or the side of the axle to wheel clamp.

Notice that one bolt on left rear wheel was broken kind of shocked me and suprised me took a pry bar and try’s to wiggle the wedge kit for the center cast didn’t really seem to move but could that one bolt being broken off have that much of an issue.

That one bolt being broken could be where the noise comes form. Does not take much to make an of noise that can be hard to figure out

Also noticed that the left axle four bolt seal flange on the axle housing is stained with oil has hair line leak nothing on ground. Possibly seal went out?
